Bilateral Toxocara optic neuropathy.

A 14-year-old girl had loss of vision in the right eye and bilateral optic disc swelling. After treatment with oral prednisone, the neuropathy resolved. An extensive evaluation led to a probable diagnosis of Toxocara optic neuropathy.

Abnormalities of the pupil and visual-evoked potential in quinine amblyopia.

Total blindness with a transient tonic pupillary response, denervation supersensitivity, and abnormal visual-evoked potentials developed in a 54-year-old man after the use of quinine sulfate for leg cramps. He later recovered normal visual acuity. A transient tonic pupillary response, denervation supersensitivity, and abnormal visual-evoked potentials in quinine toxicity, to our knowledge, have not been previously reported.

Protection of corneal endothelium during intraocular lens implantation using polymacon, a new surgical technique.

A controlled series of intraocular lens implantations on paired cat eyes was performed to determine if a polymacon sheet (Bausch & Lomb plano-T soft contact lens) could protect the corneal endothelium from damage caused by contact with a methyl methacrylate intraocular lens. A new surgical technique has been developed that reduces the endothelial cell loss from 51% (standard implantation technique) to 9% (new polymacon-shield technique).

Nonfatal methazolamide-induced aplastic anemia.

An 83-year-old man developed nonfatal aplastic anemia after taking methazolamide for three months. We made a diagnosis of methazolamide-induced aplastic anemia, discontinued all medication, gave the patient platelet and red blood cell transfusions, and treated him with oxymetholone. Approximately four months after initiation of treatment, the patient felt well, and he is currently receiving packed red blood cell transfusions every three weeks.
