Efficacy and safety of a phytoestrogen preparation derived from Glycine max (L.) Merr in climacteric symptomatology: a multicentric, open, prospective and non-randomized trial.

A multicentric, open, prospective, observational and no-randomized clinical trial was carried out in Spain with 190 postmenopausal women receiving a soy preparation rich in isoflavones (PHYTO SOYA, capsules containing 17.5 mg isoflavones). The main object of the present study was to investigate its efficacy in alleviating the symptomatology derived from the lack of estrogen, mainly hot flushes, but also other symptoms such as sleep disorder, anxiety, depression, vaginal dryness, loss of libido and bone pain. Each patient received 35 mg isoflavones per day in two doses. During the four months' treatment, a statistically significant decrease in the number of hot flushes with PHYTO SOYA was experienced by 80.82% women; only 5,48% patients did not improve with the treatment. The average reduction was 47.8%, which is equivalent to 4 hot flushes. All the other studied parameters also showed a statistically significant decrease. No severe side-effects were reported and tolerance was excellent. Treatment with PHYTO SOYA resulted in a significant improvement of the symptomatology that accompanies the lack of estrogen during menopause.

[Valaciclovir in the treatment of initial infection by genital herpes virus: comparative study].

BASIS: To know the therapeutic efficiency in the genital herpes of two drugs: acyclovir and valaciclovir. METHODS: There were included in the study 142 patients with diagnostic of clinic first episode by genital herpes in two equal groups of 71 patients each one. The distribution in both groups was random to receive one of the following treatment standards: acyclovir 200 mg by verbal each 5 hours, during 7 days; valaciclovir: 500 mg by verbal each 12 hours during 7 days being valued objective and subjective response to the treatment. RESULTS: The prevailing symptom was the pain (45% and 46.4%), followed by the warmth or burning sensation. The most frequent lesions in both groups were blisters (39.4% and 46.4%). The analysis response to the treatment in relationship to the symptoms as well as in the lesions it could be appreciated that there are not significant differences in the patients treated in both groups (p = 0.3). The adverse effect communicated by the discussed patients were scarce and similar in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Both drugs are suitable for the treatment of the genital herpes. The advantage observed with the valaciclovir is the dosing comfort and the facility of completing the treatment.

Influence of sex, age, and menopause in serum osteocalcin (BGP) levels.

Osteocalcin (bone Gla protein) is a promising marker of bone turnover useful in the diagnosis and follow-up of high turnover osteoporosis. Conflicting results have been reported about its physiological variations according to sex, age, and menopause. Several, but not all, authors have found increased levels in males, with aging, and after menopause. We measured serum osteocalcin in 126 healthy subjects, 57 males and 69 females, aged between 45 and 88 years. Osteocalcin was higher (P less than 0.01) in males (6.24 +/- 0.36) than in females (4.32 +/- 0.34). This sexual difference was significant, too, in subjects younger and older than 60 years. Osteocalcin increased with age, linearly in males (P less than 0.05), and exponentially in females (P less than 0.05). Although there was a difference in age (P less than 0.05), no difference in osteocalcin levels between premenopausal women and women in their first two postmenopausal years was detected, while osteocalcin was significantly increased in women more than two years into menopause. We conclude that osteocalcin in healthy subjects is higher in males than in females and increases with age after 45 years in both sexes. Osteocalcin levels increase in women more than two years beyond menopause, but not only as an effect on aging.

[Incidence and multivariable genesis of postmenopausal depression].

The present work tried to find out the postmenopausal depression rates and whether depressive symptoms are due to hormonal disturbances or to multiple variables, not only biological, but also psychological and social. The sample included 128 women with no psychiatric history, pharmacological therapy or recent, important events. Results show a high rate of depression related to different variables, but especially over that of the negative anticipated thinking.
