Nursing practice can be enhanced by using a systems approach to the client with multifaceted health problems. The Neuman Systems Model, based on the conceptual framework of stress and reaction to stressors, provides a framework for organizing a holistic approach to the nursing care needs of the terminally ill client with pressure ulcers.
A complex and dangerous area of medical intervention with the elderly population is drug therapy. Although drugs have contributed to the well-being of many older persons, some elderly individuals are at risk due to polypharmacy and age-related factors. The purpose of this preliminary study was to investigate the medication-taking behaviors of two ethnic groups of noninstitutionalized frail elderly individuals. The findings indicate that these individuals may be at risk for harm due to their medication-taking practices. Healthcare professionals must evaluate drug use by the elderly and be aware of the risks of drug misuse by this vulnerable group.
Pressure ulcers are a major concern of hospice nurses. A recent survey of hospice agencies in an area of the southwest indicated a lack of specific standards of care for patients with pressure ulcers and no systematic method to identify patients at risk. Standards of care were subsequently developed to identify patients at risk and to manage pressure ulcers of hospice patients.

Discharge planning is a patient right and is mandated by legislation, institutions that provide credentials, and professional organizations. This study was conducted to assess nurses' knowledge and perceptions of the roles and responsibilities in the discharge planning process. Findings of this study indicated a difference in knowledge of discharge planning between nurses who have earned an associate degree and nurses who have earned a bachelor's degree. Staff development educators may use this information to justify and develop educational programs concerning discharge planning.
