Adult attachment and adult child-older parent relationships.

Adult attachment status, concurrent and early relationships with parents, and depressive symptoms were assessed in 53 adults. Individuals with consistent reports of relationships--positive or negative--were most coherent in their narratives. Depressive symptoms were associated with negativity in both recalled and current relationships with parents, but were not correlated with coherence of narratives. Clinical implications of the findings are discussed.

Black grandmothers in multigenerational households: diversity in family structure and parenting involvement in the Woodlawn community.

We report here the frequency of black grandmothers' coresidence in households with first-grade children, their patterns of involvement in parenting, and the degree to which family structure and employment affected the grandmothers' parenting involvement in a 1966/1967 community-defined population. Coresidence between grandmothers and their target first-grade grandchildren was found in 10% of the households. The 130 grandmothers' parenting involvement was substantial, second only to mother involvement, and was characterized by 2 parenting activity patterns: control and punishment, and support and punishment. The degree of grandmothers' parenting involvement differed by family structure, with grandmothers in mother-absent homes most likely to be involved. Grandmothers' employment did not moderate their engagement in parenting behaviors. These findings are consistent with previous reports of significant parenting involvement by black extended family members.

Functional status and cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's patients with and without depression.

Cognitive impairment and depression each compromise functional status in the elderly, but it is not known whether their coexistence is associated with additive functional impairment. The effect of the presence or absence of a diagnosis of major depression on functional status was examined in a group of 50 community-residing patients with dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT). Patients were diagnosed as depressed (N = 20) or not (N = 30) according to DSM-III criteria. Cognitive status was assessed with the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE), and functional status was assessed by family report of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs). Consistent with previous reports, patients with a depression diagnosis were less cognitively impaired than their nondepressed counterparts. When cognitive status was controlled for, depression diagnosis was found to have a main effect on functional impairment. Although the direction of effects between depression and functional limitations was not determined here, these results suggest that alleviating depression may decrease functional limitations in DAT patients.

Gender differences in patterns of spatial ability, environmental cognition, and math and English achievement in late adolescence.

Relationships were explored among three measures of spatial ability--the Embedded Figures Test (EFT), the Mental Rotations Test (MRT), and the Differential Aptitude Spatial Relations subtest (DAT)--an environmental cognition task (MAP), American College Testing (ACT) math and English achievement, and gender in a sample of 282 undergraduates. Variance attributable to gender among the spatial tasks ranged from 0.5% in the EFT to 12% in the MRT. Gender accounted for only 1% of the variance in the MAP task. Gender differences were noted in regression analyses; women's math and English achievement scores were both predictive of spatial ability, while for men, only math achievement was predictive of spatial ability. The results were interpreted as substantiating sex role socialization theory of cognitive abilities.

Role of ions in activation of human lymphocytes.

Phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulated lymphocytes were cultured in media containing varying levels of K+, Mg2+, Ca2+. Cell activation was monitored by measuring nuclear diameter and by evaluating the area of nucleolus which reacted with silver nitrate. Decreasing extracellular K+ from normal levels (5.0 mM) to 14% (0.7 mM) and decreasing extracellular Mg2+ from normal levels (1.0 mM) to 14% (0.14 mM) did not affect nuclear diameter or silver nitrate reactivity of PHA-stimulated lymphocytes. Chelation of extracellular Ca2+ with EGTA during the first 24 h after PHA stimulation completely inhibited the increases in silver reactivity and nuclear diameter associated with stimulation. Chelation of extracellular Ca2+ 48 h after PHA stimulation did not inhibit lymphocyte stimulation. Inhibitory effects of EGTA were completely reversed if CaCl2 was added to the medium within 24 h of PHA stimulation. By 48 h the effects were irreversible.

A field study of persistence of antibodies in California horses vaccinated against western, eastern, and Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis.

As a result of the continuing threat of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE), a study was made to determine if revaccination against VEE (TC-83 vaccine) was feasible and if revaccination could be incorporated into other routine vaccination practices. Of the horses given annual vaccination with bivalent western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) and eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) vaccine, 57% retained detectable serum-neutralizing (SN) antiboyd titers for VEE 18 months after the initial VEE vaccination was given. Of horses with no record of WEE-EEE vacinnation, 100% retained detectable VEE SN antibody titers over the same period. The VEE geometric mean titer was 25 times greater for horses not previously vaccinated against WEE-EEE than for horses given annual WEE-EEE vaccination at the time of VEE vaccination. In horses vaccinated against VEE 18 months previously, the geometric mean titer increased from 4 to 70 at 48 days after the intitial WEE-EEE vaccination. This increase indicated that similar antigenic factors for VEE are possibly present in bivalent WEE-EEE vaccine. In horses previously vaccinated against WEE-EEE and VEE, the best SN antibody response to VEE revaccination occurred when VEE vaccine was given simultaneously with the bivalent WEE-EEE vaccine. Of 150 serum samples tested by both the SN and the hemagglutination-inhibiton tests, agreement between positive reactions at greater than or equal to 1:10 was 70% for VEE, 81% for EEE, and 87% for WEE.

A multistate outbreak of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections linked to alfalfa sprouts grown from contaminated seeds.

A multistate outbreak of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections occurred in the United States in June and July 1997. Two concurrent outbreaks were investigated through independent case-control studies in Michigan and Virginia and by subtyping isolates with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Isolates from 85 persons were indistinguishable by PFGE. Alfalfa sprouts were the only exposure associated with E. coli O157:H7 infection in both Michigan and Virginia. Seeds used for sprouting were traced back to one common lot harvested in Idaho. New subtyping tools such as PFGE used in this investigation are essential to link isolated infections to a single outbreak.
