Lithium diisopropylamide: oligomer structures at low ligand concentrations.

One- and two-dimensional (6)Li and (15)N NMR spectroscopic studies of lithium diisopropylamide (LDA) solvated by substoichiometric concentrations of oxetane, THF, Et(2)O, and diisopropylamine are described. Partially solvated dimers and trimers are identified. Possible benefits of carrying out organolithium chemistry at low ligand concentrations are discussed.

ECT in primary and secondary depression.

The response of depressive symptoms to ECT was studied in 58 subjects who met DSM-III criteria for major depression. For data analysis, the sample was divided by diagnosis into categories of primary unipolar depression, bipolar depression, and secondary depression. Only 56% of the secondary depression group had a partial or complete remission of depressive symptoms, but 91% of the primary unipolar group and 100% of the primary bipolar group improved. Subdividing the secondary depression group by primary diagnosis revealed a differential response, with alcoholism and schizophrenia having the most favorable outcomes.

Acute effects of antidepressants on hippocampal seizures.

Electrically kindled hippocampal seizures in rats were used to evaluate the acute effects of the antidepressants amitriptyline, imipramine, desipramine, bupropion, maprotiline, and trazodone on behavioral and electrical convulsions. All of the drugs reduced afterdischarge duration significantly. Behavioral seizures were not significantly reduced by bupropion or trazodone, whereas the other drugs did reduce seizure severity. Afterdischarge threshold was not modified by these drugs. In contrast, phenobarbital significantly elevated threshold and reduced seizure severity and afterdischarge duration. Amitriptyline was the most effective antidepressant, attenuating both seizure severity and afterdischarge duration.
