The authors describe two cases admitted following head injury and presenting with a dilated, stiff pupil. CT scan of the head revealed no intracranial mass lesion. The symptoms persisted over a year in one case, whereas in the other one they faded away within a few weeks. The symptoms are believed to arise due to a downward shift of the brainstem which is known to occur at the moment of head injury. The oculomotor nerve is ++over-stretched and is supposed to be partially damaged at the posterior petroclinoid ligament. The roots of the pupillomotor fibers may also be supposedly torn at the site where they leave the brainstem.
Basing on literature and on an own case, the authors discuss the pathogenesis and treatment of aneurysmal cyst of the spine. Partial resection can be curative in some surgically inaccessible lesions.
A group of 41 patients were followed up 7 years after ligation of the common carotid artery. Postoperative complications were found in 29% of cases. Raised arterial blood pressure was noted in 66% of cases, psychoneurological abnormalities in one-third of the group.
A clinical description and pathological findings are reported in a case of extrameningeal, angiogenic malignant meningioma of the vertebral canal (Th7-Th11) in a patient aged 17 years. Clinical picture was that of transverse myelitis at the Th9 level, with spastic paraparesis, funicular loss of all sensory functions and sphincter disturbances. The authors suppose that the used combined treatment (chemotherapy and radiotherapy, surgery) improved greatly the health state inhibiting the spread of metastases and prolonged survival to 3 years. Autopsy demonstrated recurrence of he tumour in the vertebral canal and numerous metastases to the brain, lungs, liver, bones and pancreas.

In the Ophthalmology Department, Medical Academy in Białystok control examinations of 17 patients aged 48-65 years were carried out late after ligation of the common carotid artery for intracranial aneurysm. The control group comprised 10 patients with such aneurysms not treated surgically. Using ophthalmodynamometry (Sobański method) reduction was found of the pressure in the central artery of the retina on the side of the ligated artery as compared to the contralateral eye and control group. Besides that, impairment of the visual functions was demonstrated in these cases, related probably to haemodynamic disturbances in the visual system following ligation of the common carotid artery.
The authors present a case of a 36 years old woman with systemic sclerosis and multiple cerebral aneurysms. A higher operative risk in patients with systemic diseases is discussed.
Using electroneurographic and morphological methods the effect of Biogonadyl on the regeneration of sectioned and the sutured sciatic nerves was evaluated. The analysis of conduction parameters in the sciatic nerves during the 6-week experiment, although the results obtained were not statistically significant, suggests a beneficial effect of Biogonadyl upon regeneration processes in the nerves. Morphological and morphometric studies have demonstrated that Biogonadyl statistically significantly accelerated axon growth in the distal part of sciatic nerves. It did not, however, influence the processes of their maturation.
Under current financial restraints, planning for the future long-term-care needs of older Canadians is coming under increasing scrutiny. Even though health care is moving to a community-based system (i.e., deinstitutionalization), this is not necessarily the most cost-effective strategy for severely disabled older adults. Three models are used in the present paper to estimate the number of severely disabled (two or more ADL disabilities abilities) older adults expected in the next 5 to 10 years in a small community in Northern Ontario. While mortality and disability rates are the main predictors, it was also necessary to consider additional factors particular to the community in question. It is suggested that for long-term-care planning to be effective and economically sound, similar strategies will be needed throughout Canada.
Chordoma is one of rare intracranial neoplasms (0.2-0.5%). Apart from classic chordoma in 1973 r. Heffelfinger and al. separated chondroid chordoma which showed better prognosis. We studied 4 classic and 3 chondroid intracranial chordomas. All tumours contained chondroitine sulfate and keratan sulfate and showed positive immunohistochemical reactions to cytokeratin, S-100 protein and vimentin, supporting the concept of common origin of both types of chordomas. Immunohistochemical studies of PCNA and Ki-67 antigen and staining AgNOR's did not show significant differences in the proliferative activity between both types chordomas what attests to biological malignancy.
The aim of the study of 41 multiform glioblastomas was the analysis of p53-protein immunoreactivity in neoplastic cells and evaluation of relationship of this biologic marker to tumour proliferation activity. Positive p53 expression was observed in 24 (58.5%) tumours, the negative one in 17 tumours (41.5%). Proliferation indexes of PCNA, anti-Ki6 and AgNORs showed high values in the multiform glioblastoma p53 positive group, but without statistical differences in comparison with the group of p53-negative glioblastomas. Significant differences were observed in survival time of patients with p53 positive tumours in comparison with p53-negative ones. In 15 patients with p53-positive multiform glioblastomas survival time was less than 6 months (62.5%) on the contrary with only 4 patients with similar survival time in p53-negative glioblastoma group (23.5%). Our results suggest that p53 expression in multiform glioblastoma cells, generally considered as the indirect index of p53 suppressor gene, reflects aggressive stadium of neoplastic disease and significantly worsens the prognosis.
