Light and electron microscopy of the spontaneous intimal thickenings of rabbit aorta. A normal arterial wall growth.

A light and electronmicroscopic study in the intima of the smaller and larger curvatures of a healthy rabbit aortic arch was performed. In both curvatures there were areas of intimal thickenings of varying width, and consisting mainly of collagenous and elastic fibers and smooth muscle cells. The structure of the wider thickenings resembled the media layer. There was evidence that such intimal thickenings are media growth in thickness and physiological in nature. It is inferred that the early lipid deposition in the intimal thickenings of the smaller, but not in the larger curvature, is not related to morphological differences, since both curvatures had the same intimal pattern.

Animals

Basosquamous cell carcinoma of the skin with metastases.

Two cases of basosquamous cell carcinoma of the skin with lymph node, lung and bone metastases are reported. Metastases occurred 4 and 7 years after identification of the primary tumour. Both the primary and metastatic lesions had areas of typical basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma and also intermediate carcinomatous tissue. In the bone metastasis of one case there were rudimentary hair follicles and areas of matrical differentiation. These cases further support the existence of basosquamous cell carcinoma and emphasize its metastatic potential.

Adult

Necrotic changes of the adrenal cortex following orthostatic collapse in rabbits.

The adreal gland was studied in 56 adult male rabbits; 44 had been subjected to orthostatic collapse, and 12 served as controls. The animals either died from collapse or were sacrificed at regular intervals up to 30 days after the experimental procedure. Nuclear pyknosis was seen in cortical cells of animals dying in collapse. At 6 or more hours following collapse, necrosis was found involving single cells, or rarely small groups of cells mainly in the zona fasciculata. Regenerative areas were present at 7 and 15 days after collapse. This necrosis may be related to a nutritive disturbance, largely hypoxic in nature (hypovolemia with blood stasis and thrombosis). The adrenal medulla showed only degranulation.

Adrenal Cortex

Necrosis of the proximal epiphyseal plate cartilage of the femur following detachment of the perichondral ring. Its relationship to the etiology of proximal epiphysiolysis of the femur.

A histological study of the proximal epiphyseal plate cartilage of rabbit femurs following detachment of the perichondral ring was performed. 15 animals were used, 5 of which being controls. Slight to severe necrotic changes in the plate were present in 9 out of 10 animals. In severe necrosis there was formation of fissures similar to those seen in human femoral epiphysiolysis. The necrosis was considered ischemic in nature and due to the detachment of the perichondral ring with involvement of the blood supply for the femoral epiphysis. Also the epiphyseal and metaphyseal bone marrow and bone tissue, as well as the articular cartilage, presented necrotic changes in a few animals. Such necrosis of the epiphyseal plate may be a factor in the pathogenesis of human proximal epiphysiolysis of the femur.

[Cerebral actinomycosis. Anatomo-clinical case report and review of the Brazilian literature].

A case of central nervous system actinomycosis is reported. A 33-year-old male complained of headache, vomiting and blurred vision lasting for eight days prior to admission. On examination, a right hemiparesis, as well an intracranial hypertension were detected. The cerebrospinal fluid showed mild lymphomononuclear hypercytosis. Necropsy disclosed three abscess in the cerebral hemispheres, in addition to moderate cerebral edema on the left side but without purulent leptomeningitis. Actinomyces filaments and granules were demonstrated in the cerebral and lung abscessess. The Brazilian literature on actinomycosis is reviewed and six published cases with nervous system involvement were found. Relevant clinical and anatomical aspects of the cases and of the present one are discussed.

Actinomycosis

Pituitary carcinoma with liver metastases and Cushing syndrome. Report of a case.

A 38-year-old woman complained of headache, visual impairment, and diabetes insipidus for 18 months prior to rapid onset of Cushing syndrome and amenorrhea. An autopsy disclosed a pituitary carchinoma invading the right cavernous sinus and two liver metastases. The tumor cells were chromophobic and agranular, with scarce polymorphism and rare mitoses. A review of the literature showed that the association of Cushing syndrome to pituitary carcinomas increases in direct proportion to the occurence of metastases. Such association was noted in almost half of the reported cases of pituitary carcinomas with extracranial dissemination.
