Effect of different polymerization techniques on dimensional stability of record bases.

In this study, discrepancies in the adaptation of the posterior borders of maxillary record bases to their casts were analyzed with five polymerization techniques: (1) bench curing, (2) curing under a coat of petroleum jelly, (3) curing in a monomer atmosphere, (4) curing under air pressure, and (5) curing under warm water and air pressure. Ten record bases were made with each of the five techniques and were tested immediately for dimensional accuracy. Measurements of adaptations were made at three points that represent the right and left crest of the ridge and midpalatal region with a measuring microscope equipped with a filar unit-measuring eyepiece. Dimensional changes were observed under all test conditions. The monomer atmosphere technique produced the least dimensional change when compared with other techniques.

A comparative study between three ethnic groups to derive some standards for maxillary arch dimensions.

A sample of 91 adult Philippinos, 45 males and 46 females, were selected for maxillary arch measurements. The intercanine width (C-C), intermolar width (M-M), molar incisor (M-I) and molar canine (M-C) length were measured. The measurements were compared to previous studies of maxillary arch dimensions for adult male and female Egyptians and Saudi Arabians. The results showed wider (M-M) measurements for the Egyptians than for the Philippinos, who also showed wider (C-C) arch dimensions than the Saudi Arabians.

Posterior peripheral seal distortion related to processing temperature.

A conventional acrylic resin was processed at temperatures varying from 135 degrees F to 180 degrees F. No significant distortion in the posterior peripheral seal of a denture base was noted when the material was processed at or below the manufacturer's recommended temperature. Statistically significant distortion was noted in the posterior peripheral seal of a denture base when processing was done above the recommended temperature. An acrylic resin specially designed to be boiled produced significantly less distortion in a denture base than the conventional acrylic resin.

The effect of gypsum products and separating materials on the typography of denture base materials.

The typography of polymethyl methacrylate processed against various gypsum products coated with various separating materials was studied under an SEM. Tinfoil and two commercial tin foil substitutes were used as separating material during processing, and the surfaces of the resulting acrylic resin forms were studied for topographical differences. Tinfoil and alpha 2 hemihydrates produced the smoothest surfaces. As a practical solution, a good quality tinfoil substitute and alpha 1 hemihydrate could be used when processing polymethyl methacrylate resin.
