6-substituted 1-methylquinolinium-2-dithioacetic acid zwitterions: antileukemia activity.

Condensation of the anhydro bases derived from 6-substituted 1-methylquinaldinium iodides with carbon disulfide provided the 2-dithioacetic acid zwitterions. Since 1.6-dimethylquinolinium-2-dithioacetic acid zwitterion previously showed appreciable activity against P-388 lymphocytic leukemia in mice, a series of analogs with other 6-substituents was synthesized to assess the importance of substitution in this position. Both electron-donating and electron-attracting 6-substituents gave compounds with antileukemia activity. The 6-unsubstituted analog had only marginal activity.

Pyridinium- and quinolinium-2-dithioacetic acid zwitterions: antiradiation and anticancer activities.

Pyridinium-, quinolinium-, and one pyrimidinium-2-dithioacetic acid zwitterions were prepared by condensation of the N-methyl heterocyclic anhydro bases with carbon disulfide. Reaction of the 2-methylpyridine methiodide anhydro base with carbon disulfide resulted in replacement of the 2-methyl group to give the 1-methylpyridinium-2-dithioacetic acid zwitterion. The 1,6-dimethylquinolinium-2-dithioacetic acid zwitterion showed appreciable anticancer activity against P-388 lymphocytic leukemia in mice, but the other zwitterions tested showed no activity. No antiradiation activity was found for 1-methyl-pyridinium-2-dithioacetic acid zwitterion.

Being imitated by an adult and the subsequent imitative behavior of retarded children.

Institutionalized retarded subjects (N=57) were assigned to one of three experimental conditions during a simple three-choice task in which the subjects and the experimenter took turns feeding colored plastic "Cookie Monster." In the imitation condition, the experimenter imitated the subject's choice, and in the ninimtation condition, the experimenter avoided imitating the subject. Following imitation or nonimitation, the subject was given opportunities to imitate the experimenter. In the modeling only condition, the subject's choice always followed the experimenter's so that the subject always had the opportunity to imitate. Analysis of variance revealed a significant difference among the three conditions (p less than .008) in the subjects' tendency to imitate the experimenter. Paired comparisons between conditions showed that subjects in the imitation condition imitated significantly more (p less than .05) than subjects in either the nonimitation or modeling only condition. The nonimitation and modeling only conditions did not differ significantly. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings were discussed.

Relationship between cognitive tempo and selective attention in learning disabled children.

The relationship between cognitive tempo and selective attention in 29 learning disabled children was investigated. The performance of the 9 reflective and the 9 impulsive children on selective-attention tasks was compared. An examination of t tests and correlations between variables for each task showed a relationship between cognitive tempo and selective attention. This relationship was stronger for central than for incidental recall.

Synthesis and antimalarial activity of heterocyclic alkyl disulfides, thiosulfates, and dithio acid derivatives.

Based on the antimalarial activity in mice of bis(4-rho-acetamidobenzenesulfonamidophenyl) disulfide, a series of N-heterocyclic alkyl disulfides and thiosulfates was synthesized and screened for antimalarial activity. Several related dithio acid dianions and S- blocked derivatives were also screened to provide an indication of the possible role that thiol anions might play in malaria chemotherapy. Activity was limited by toxicity with these compounds, and none of those tested, with the exception of bis(4-rho-acetamidobenzenesulfonamidophenyl) disulfide, showed curative activity in either a mouse or chick test.

Antiradiation compounds XV: condensations of carbon disulfide with amino, chloro, cyanomethyl, and sulfonamido heterocycles.

Condensations of carbon disulfide were carried out with amino, chloro, and diamino heterocycles to give condensed ring thiazoline-2-thiones and imidazoline-2-thiones, with cyanomethyl heterocycles to give dithio acid derivatives, and with heterocyclic sulfonamides to give sulfonyldithiocarbamates. Of several examples tested, pyrido[3,2-d]thiazoline-2-thione, disodium 2-(5-chloro-2-thienyl)-3,3-dimercaptoacrylonitrile, triethylammonium 4-sulfamoylphenyldithiocarbamate, ammonium beta-phenethyldithiocarbamate, and methyl N-(thiophene-2-sulfonyl)dithiocarbamate, only the last-named compound showed any radiation protection for mice. Several compounds gave negative tests for antimalarial activity.

Parents' predictions of their children's perceptions of family relations.

Thirty children from 15 families were administered the Bene-Anthony Family Relations Test. Their parents then assigned test responses as they imagined their children had. With only two exceptions, both involving first born boys, parents predicted their children's responses beyond chance expectation. However, significant discrepancies were found between children's responses and their parents' predictions. Parents tended to overestimate their own centrality in the family perceptions of their children, particularly perceptions involving negative feelings, and to underestimate children's negative feelings involving their siblings.
