Pilot epidemiological study of attitudes towards pain in horses.

This preliminary study investigated the attitudes, and evaluated the current practice of a sample of the veterinary profession in the UK in relation to the management of pain in horses. In June 2001, a questionnaire was posted to 260 veterinarians in specialised equine practice, and 140 veterinarians in general practice with a significant equine caseload. There was a 25 per cent response rate to the questionnaire, which recorded information about the availability and prescription of analgesic drugs, the factors influencing the selection of analgesics and their administration, and estimates of the severity of pain associated with selected clinical conditions. There were considerable variations in the practices applied to manage pain in horses, implying that there are similar attitudinal barriers to the optimal management of pain in horses as have been identified in other domestic spedes.

Being better by being right: subjective group dynamics and derogation of in-group deviants when generic norms are undermined.

The authors predicted that derogation of group deviants depends on the extent to which in-group norms or values are validated or undermined in a social context. In Experiment 1 participants were less tolerant and derogated in-group deviants more when other in-group members opposed the norm. In Experiment 2 participants derogated in-group deviants more than out-group deviants and than noncategorized individuals, but only when normative in-group members lacked uniformity. In Experiment 3 participants derogated in-group deviants more when there was uncertainty about in-group superiority. These results are consistent with previous research on the black sheep effect (J. M. Marques, V. Y. Yzerbyt, & J. -P. Leyens, 1988) and with the model of subjective group dynamics (D. Abrams, J. M. Marques, N. J. Bown, & M. Henson, 2000; J. M. Marques, D. Abrams, D. Paez, & C. Martinez-Taboada, 1998).

Pro-norm and anti-norm deviance within and between groups.

Participants evaluated other individuals who deviated in either an anti- or pro-normative direction relative to normative members. In Study 1, in-group gender-normative members were rated more positively than deviant members. The pro-norm deviant was viewed as more attractive than the anti-norm deviant. In Study 2 anti-norm in-group deviants were evaluated more negatively than anti-norm out-group deviants even though both held identical attitudes. In both studies, despite objective equivalence, pro-norm deviance was perceived as less "atypical" than anti-norm deviance. Judgments and reactions to deviance depend on group membership and the direction of deviance, not just its magnitude. Evaluations of deviants are also related to perceivers' identification with their own group. These findings are consistent with our model of subjective group dynamics.

[Mental health policies and changes in emergency service demand].

OBJECTIVE: To verify the modifications observed in a school hospital psychiatric emergency unit in Ribeirão Preto - SP, Brazil (EP-RP), due to alterations in the mental health policies implemented in this region. METHODS: Data about attendances was collected from university hospital files of the EP-RP, from 1988 to 1997. The following variables were studied: sex, age, origin and main diagnosis. Data about changes in mental health policies of the region was obtained from documents of the city and state departments of health. RESULTS: The yearly increase in the number of attendances followed the progressive involvement of EP-RP with the mental health service network, as the number of patients who looked for the service in 1995 was 2.3 times greater than in 1988. During this period, attendance at the EP-RP gave support to the modifications in the mental health policies in this region, resulting in a reduction of 654 psychiatry beds. In 1996 and 1997, a reduction of about 20% was observed in the total of attendance, as compared to 1995, result from an increase in the attendance capacity and number of the extra-hospital services. Since 1990, the EP-RP started to attend a higher proportion of older, male patients, with drug dependency and psychotic disorders and a lower proportion of non-psychotic patients. CONCLUSIONS: The changes observed in the EP-RP are related to modifications in the Ribeirão Preto region mental health policies, like the psychiatric beds control, installed in 1990, the reduction of psychiatric beds after 1993, and the creation and/or amplification of extra-hospital services, in 1995.

Lead toxicity on endocrine testicular function in an occupationally exposed population.

The hypothalamo-pituitary-testicular axis was evaluated in a group of 23 men who worked in the lead smelting industry and had a history of occupational inorganic lead exposure. The endocrine status of the workers was related to lead poisoning biological markers. According to the duration of their lead exposure they were divided into three groups: group 1 less than 1 year, n = 5; group 2 between 3 and 5 years, n = 8; group 3 greater than 5 years, n = 10. Serum testosterone (T), steroid binding globulin (SBG), free testosterone index (T/SBG), serum luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), Blood lead levels, and blood zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) were measured in all workers. Groups 2 and 3 showed a decrease in serum testosterone levels, an increase in SBG levels, and a decrease in T/SBG index, suggesting a correlation between testicular dysfunction and duration of exposure. There was an increase in serum LH in group 1, which was not progressive. This suggests that prolonged lead exposure initially produces a direct testicular toxicity followed by hypothalamic or pituitary disturbance when longer periods of exposure take place.

[Meningeal carcinomatosis. A one year's case load; review of the literature].

10 cases of meningeal carcinomatosis treated in the Neurological Unit at the Instituto Português de Oncologia de Francisco Gentil in Lisbon are presented. Pertinent bibliography is reviewed, particularly the one concerned with physiopathology and treatment. Some research topics about biological response modifiers and drug transport systems are mentioned.

[Mucoviscidosis with respiratory symptomatology in the neonatal period].

A case of cystic fibrosis presented in the neonatal period with respiratory symptomatology associated with early pancreatic insufficiency is reported. The CFTR gene molecular analysis was found to be a compound heterozygotes for delta F508 and G542X. The rarity of this mode of presentation and the inclusion of this entity in the differential diagnosis for neonatal respiratory distress syndrome is emphasised. The pathogenesis and some therapeutic aspects carried out in our patient, which might have improved the life expectancy of patients with this disease, are discussed.
