PAS-positive cells of the pars intermedia are calcium-sensitive in the goldfish maintained in a hyposmotic milieu.

Cytological changes in the pars intermedia of the goldfish were investigated after adding calcium to deionized water (DW). In fish maintained in DW, the PAS-positive cells are highly stimulated in comparison to cells of fish kept in fresh water (FW). In DW supplemented with calcium at the same concentration as in FW (2 mM/l), the hyperactivity of the PAS-positive cells is prevented. When calcium ions are added 60 h before the animals are sacrificed, the PAS positive cells start to show signs of regression and their granules are stored: the release of the granular material appears to be suppressed by calcium. In the goldfish, the PAS-positive cells, homologous to a similar cell type in the eel, react only very weakly with the PAS technique. The name "calcium-sensitive cells" appears to be more appropriate in the goldfish for this particular cell type, secreting an unknown factor. This factor, different from the prolactin produced in the rostral pars distalis of the hypophysis, might be an equivalent of a "hypercalcin".

Actions of atmospheric ionization on spontaneous activity of an amphibian larva.

In Pleurodeles waltlii (Urodela) larvae, spontaneous activity and the tendency to leave water are significantly influenced by artificial air ionization. Atmospheric ions of negative and positive polarities have opposite effects: the latter reduce spontaneous activity by 48% whereas negative ions increase it by 39%. This difference must be considered the result of a specific behavioral effect rather than attributable to the stage of development of the larvae. A comparison of our results with data in the literature indicates that the action of the air ions on amphibian activity may involve the modulation of serotonin and prolactin releases.

[Cyto-immunological study of the Pleurodele pituitary gland].

In the pituitary of an Amphibian (Urodela), various cell types were localized by cytoimmunological techniques: corticotrophs located in a rostral zone near the median eminence, ventral orangeophilic cells secreting a prolactin-like hormone and erythrosinophilic cells in a more dorso-caudal situation secreting growth hormone. Alpha-MSH and beta-MSH produceng cell were identified in the intermediate lobe; these cells were also labelled with antibodies against 1-24 ACTH and 17-39 ACTH. These data are in accordance with results obtained after an experimental study of the prolactin cells.
