Monoclonal gammopathy in systemic lupus erythematosus.

In order to ascertain the incidence of monoclonal gammopathy (MG) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 120 SLE patients were evaluated. Four patients (3.3%), two of whom were under 50 years of age, were found to have a monoclonal immunoglobulin in their serum. Our data agree with the previous literature in demonstrating a higher incidence of MG in SLE patients in comparison with the general population. Neither the clinical importance nor the pathogenetic significance of this association is known.

Complement and lupus: old concepts and new directions.

In this review it is our intention to outline briefly the relevance of the complement system in systemic lupus erythematosus. Three main issues will be addressed: the role of complement in handling immune complexes (ICs), the association between complement deficiencies and IC diseases, and the value of measuring complement components and their conversion products in monitoring disease activity.

[Usefulness of cyclosporin in the treatment of pemphigus vulgaris. Apropos of 3 cases].

Cyclosporin is a useful drug in several autoimmune diseases. It has been recently evaluated, with varying results, in several dermatoses such as pemphigus vulgaris. Three cases of this condition treated with cyclosporin are reported. The drug permitted to reduce and then to suppress prolonged corticosteroid therapy, and remission was maintained after exacerbation even in monotherapy. Hypertrichosis and gum hypertrophy were the common adverse effects.

[Ovarian cancer in a female patient with von Recklinghausen's disease].

A 29-year-old female with von Recklinghausen's disease developed ovarian epithelial cancer. Neurofibromatosis is a dominant autosomal disease predisposing to a wide range of tumors. The association between neurofibromatosis and malignancy was reviewed, analyzing the relevant features for the present case.

[Amebic liver abscess: presentation of 4 cases].

We report four patients with amebic liver abscess diagnosed in our hospital between January 1985 and January 1990. Mean patient age was 40 years. All patients had previously travelled to an endemic area. Fever, weight loss, right-upper-quadrant pain and hepatomegaly were the most frequent clinical manifestation. Two patients had a history of diarrhea. Diagnosis was made by epidemiology, clinical manifestation, ultrasonic scanning and computerized tomography and serologic test. Two patients received metronidazole exclusively and two patients required percutaneous catheter drainage under ultrasound guidance.
