HIV testing in Glasgow Genito-Urinary Medicine Clinics 1985-1987.

Between 1 March 1985 and 28 February 1987, 1659 patients attending Glasgow Genito-Urinary Medicine (GUM) Clinics were tested for antibodies to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Forty (2.4%) were positive. Thirty-seven of these were homosexual (36/37) or bisexual (1/37) males. The overall prevalence of antibodies to HIV in this group was 3.9% (37/940) and showed no significant increase over the two year period. Following the extensive media campaign in October 1986, the total numbers tested each month rose from an average of around 50, to 144 in December 1986. There was a further rise to 220 in March 1987 coinciding with AIDS week in March 1987. Since then the numbers have again declined. Before the October campaign, 70% of these tested (692/990) were homo/bisexual males. After the campaign the number of heterosexual males and females rose sharply, accounting for 68% of these tested.

Benign squamous papillomatosis: case report.

Squamous papillae in the vestibule are common. They were once considered to be normal variants of female anatomy, but reports of the viral aetiology of such lesions are emerging. When they are symptomatic, squamous papillae can lead to problems in sexual relationships between healthy partners. Here we report a case that responded well to treatment.

Temporomandibular joint sounds related to orthodontic therapy.

A cross-sectional survey for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sounds was conducted on 347 orthodontic patients before, during, and after treatment. Those patients who reported joint sounds, or in whom sounds were noted on clinical examination, were subjected to an audiovisual evaluation which was recorded on videotape to identify more precisely the character of the sounds during jaw opening and closing. TMJ sounds were quite common before, during, and after orthodontic treatment. There was a significant association among three variables: joint sounds, age, and treatment. It is not clear, however, whether joint sounds increased due to orthodontic treatment, age, or both. No significant associations were found between TMJ sounds and functional occlusal factors. Significantly more sounds were noted by the examiners than were reported by the patients. Medium or high amplitude sounds were evident in 32.6% of the 135 subjects who underwent the audiovisual examination.

Calcitonin and postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Fasting serum calcitonin levels were measured in 54 postmenopausal women who had for 10 years been taking part in a double blind trial to assess the effect of the synthetic oestrogen, mestranol, on postmenopausal bone loss. There were no differences in calcitonin levels between mestranol treated and placebo groups. Fifteen of the women were challenged with a calcium infusion to measure the secretory reserve of calcitonin. Oestrogen treatment did not increase the calcitonin response to calcium infusion. The three patients who exhibited the greatest responses were placebo treated. Bone density was measured by gamma-ray absorptiometry over the ten year period and the annual rate of change of bone density calculated. No correlation could be found between basal calcitonin level or calcitonin reserve and change in bone density. Our results indicate that postmenopausal osteoporosis is not caused by a deficiency of calcitonin and that the action of oestrogen therapy to prevent bone loss does not involve calcitonin.
