Sixty-nine patients receiving atrioventricular sequential (DVI) pacemakers are compared to 67 patients receiving ventricular demand (VVI) pacemakers for control of the symptoms of sinus node dysfunction. The populations were similar with comparable preparing incidences of each assayed symptom and number of symptoms per patient (symptom density). Syncope was well controlled by both DVI and VVI pacing. DVI pacing was better than VVI pacing for control of all other symptoms. Symptom density response: DVI pre, 3.3 +/- 0.95; post, 0.43 +/- 0.63; VVI pre, 3.2 +/- 0.97; post 1.75 +/- 1.44 (p less than 0.000). Atrial electrode problems were encountered in five (7.3%) of the DVI patients and one (0.74%) ventricular electrode required repositioning.

Many studies have reported similar weight gains and nitrogen balance in groups of well-nourished animals fed either orally or intravenously, but none have investigated the effects on malnourished animals. After protein depleting for 14 days, rats were refed with a D25-4.25% amino acid solution orally ad lib, by gastrostomy, or intravenously. IV animals gained more weight with greater body fat formation than either enteral group but had lower intestinal mass and nitrogen. Route of administration influenced substrate utilization in malnourished animals fed identical diets. We conclude that weight gain cannot be used as a comparative indicator of nitrogen retention between malnourished animals fed enterally and those fed intravenously.

The effect of tetraethyl lead (TEL) on food and water intake in adult male albino rats was studied. Animals received 1, 4, 7, 10, or 13 mg/kg body weight of TELin peanut oil, or a peanut oil placebo, via either intragastric (IG) intubation or intraperitoneal (IP) injection. For food intake, route of administration was a significant factor and, compared to baseline levels, food intake was significantly depressed at dosage levels of 7, 10, and 13 mg/kg for both IP and IG administration. Further, the time course of food intake differed significantly across route of administration. Water intake was also significantly depressed at 7, 10, and 13 mg/kg, but route of administration was not a critical factor. Results were discussed in relation to clinical and experimental data on lead intoxication, and were viewed as severely limiting the utility of employing food and/or water as motivational variables in assessment of behavioral effects linked to TEL poisoning.
Previous reports have suggested that neonatal thyroxine administration may enhance learning ability in rats as infants but the rats become deficient in learning as they grow older. This experiment compared neonatally thyroxine-injected rats with injected and nonhanded controls on passive and active avoidance and a geotactic cold-escape discrimination. Thyroxine-injected infant rats were superior to controls on active avoidance, inferior on passive avoidance, and equal on discriminated escape. Adolescent rats which had received postnatal thyroxine were inferior to controls in Lashley III maze acquisition whether or not they had received supplementary thryoxine at the time of training. These data suggest that differences in locomotor activity, rather than in learning ability, account for early behavioral effects and that changes other than endocrine disturbances account for the adult deficits. The results are compatible with previous contentions that excess neonatal thyroxine disrupts the timing of brain development.
