The role of dysphoric mood and gender in interpersonal responses to nondysphoric others.

There now exists a sizeable body of research on interpersonal responses to dysphoric individuals, yet relatively few studies have addressed responses of dysphoric individuals toward others. This study compared responses of dysphoric and nondysphoric individuals toward a nondysphoric person within same sex and opposite-sex dyads. Dysphoric and nondysphoric subjects did not differ in their desire for future interaction with their interactional partner. Dysphoric subjects reported a greater reduction in feelings of sadness, hostility, and impatience following the interaction, and among dysphoric subjects, those who interacted with a female reported a greater decrease in anxiety than did those who interacted with a male. Dysphoric subjects also perceived their partners to act in a more dysphoric fashion than did nondysphoric subjects.

A problem-oriented assessment procedure for individual program planning and evaluation.

This article describes the development, implementation, and evaluation of an assessment procedure for use in a psychiatric day therapy setting. The assessment procedure, which incorporates a behavioural problem-oriented approach, serves as a basis for individual program planning with day patients, and provides data for program evaluation purposes. Evaluation of the assessment procedure indicated satisfaction among staff and clients with the process and results of collecting assessment information. Overall, it was concluded that the original objectives guiding development of the assessment procedure had been achieved. The purpose of this paper is to describe an assessment procedure developed for use in a day therapy program associated with a 30-bed psychiatric unit in a general hospital. The procedure, which provides a basis for individual program planning as well as program evaluation, was devised in response to staff concerns about the functioning of the day program. Since the assessment procedure was designed, in part, to meet the requirements of staff working in a generic day therapy psychiatric program, it was thought that it might be of interest to others working in similar settings.

Parental alcohol abuse and gender as predictors of psychopathology in adult children of alcoholics.

By means of procedures designed to address methodological weaknesses of previous research, this study tested hypotheses regarding the presumed greater tendency of adult children of alcoholics (ACA) to be characterized by symptomatology indicative of psychopathology than adult children of nonalcoholics (ACNA). Gender of ACA and gender of alcoholic parent were also examined as predictors of psychopathology in ACA. Four-hundred-twenty-five undergraduate students completed the Clinical Analysis Questionnaire to assess anxiety, depression, and general maladjustment, and the Children of Alcoholics Screening Test to identify ACA (88 females, 30 males) and ACNA (235 females, 72 males). ACA reported more symptomatology indicative of depression and general maladjustment than did ACNA. but gender of ACA and gender of alcoholic parent were not significant predictors of psychopathology among ACA.
