Effects of intravenous glucose and aminoacids on gastric secretion.

Five healthy females were submited to parenteral nutrition with aminoacids and glucose solution and the acidity and volume of gastric juice were studied. We could find no difference in the obtained values at the various phases, even after the administration of betazole. From this we can conclude that the infusion of aminoacids and glucose does not alter the pattern of gastric secretion.

Amino Acids

[Effect of H2 blockers on the surgical indications for peptic ulcer].

The effects of introduction of cimetidine therapy were studied by an analysis of all cases of peptic ulcer who came to be operated at the Hospital das Clinicas of the University of São Paulo in the period between 1966 and 1985. A reduction in the frequency of surgical interventions especially after 1978, was verified. Ten percent of all cases operated between 1973 and 1985 and chosen at random were studied in a more detailed way. A reduction in the number of operations for gastric and duodenal ulcers was found. There was a greater interval between diagnosis and surgery, an increased number of operations for stenosis and hemorrhagic peptic ulcers and a reduction in frequency of operations for perforated peptic ulcer. There were no significant differences as to the sex and age of patients, except in cases of perforated peptic ulcer, with a larger number of female patients.

[Frequency of lipoprotein-X (LP-X) in icteric patients. Comparison with some bioquimical data (author's transl)].

The authors have studied the frequency of an abnormal lipoprotein (LP-X), by the method presented by YAE e col. (21). The LP-X test is useful in differentiating of a cholestatic process from a non-cholestatic one, but it is not adequate to distinguish an intrahepatic cholestasis from an extrahepatic biliary obstruction. Out of the 41 icteric patients who were studied, a frequency of the presence of the LP-X was observed in 68.3% thus distributed: viral hepatitis 90,5% obstructive jaundice 85,7%, jaundice of uncertain etiology 37.6%; it was not present in 5 patients with hepatic cirrhosis and in the serum of 21 healthy volunteers. A significant association was found between the presence of LP-X and an abnormal curve of lipoproteins.

[Duodenal ulcer treated by carbenoxolone sodium. Endoscopically controlled trial (author's transl)].

The authors present the results of a clinical and endoscopic controlled trial of outpatients with duodenal ulcer treated with carbenoxolone (CBX) and carbenoxolone plus antacids (CBX + AA). They observed complete healing of the duodenal ulcer in 77%-83,3% in both groups of patients. They concluded that CBX is important in the treatment of duodenal ulcer been equally effective alone or in association with antacids.

Antacids

[Colonoscopy technic. Evaluation of 80 examinations].

Eighty colonoscopies were done in 77 patients with the CF-MB Olympus colonoscope. A schedule of the examination is analyzed. The bowel preparation can be done at the patient's home. If the patient is well prepared psychologically, the use of antispasmodics or sedatives is not required. The position proposed for the patient is on his back with legs flexed. The symptom most frequently found during the examination was abdominal pain related to the introduction of the colonoscope and to the colon distension; 28,7% of the patients had no symptoms. In the absence of colon obstruction the colonoscope can reach the transverse colon even though fluoroscopy was not used. There were no complications in the 80 examinations performed.
