HLA-DP antigens in HIV-infected individuals.

We studied the distribution of HLA-DP antigens in 74 HIV-infected Danish homosexual men and 188 ethnically matched healthy individuals, using the primed lymphocyte typing (PLT) technique. Forty of the patients developed AIDS within 3 years after diagnosis, whereas the remaining 34 were healthy or had only minor symptoms for 3 years or more (median observation time was 42 months). HLA-DPwl seemed to be decreased (relative risk = 0.3) in AIDS patients (5.0 per cent) when compared to patients with minor symptoms (14.7 per cent) and healthy controls (14.9 per cent). These differences were, however, not statistically significant. There were no other apparent deviations between patients (or subgroups of patients) and controls.

Ovulation in uremic women: the reproductive cycle in women on chronic hemodialysis.

We studied five uremic women of fertile age and on chronic intermittent haemodialysis over a 3-month period. The purpose of this investigation was to establish how often the hormonal pattern indicated ovulation in uremic women and, thereby, the possibility of an inexpedient pregnancy. The pituitary ovarian axis was estimated by analyzing the serum concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteotropic hormone, progesterone, estradiol, and prolactin. Forty percent of the investigated cycles seemed to be ovulatory, though with a slightly atypical hormonal pattern. Because of these factors, it is recommended that sexually active women of fertile age and on chronic intermittent hemodialysis consider the use of contraception in order to avoid unwanted pregnancies.

Survival of microorganisms and helminth eggs in green pills and cobs processed from a green crop irrigated with sewage.

A grass crop which was contaminated with domestic sewage was dried in a hot air drying plant in order to observe the effect of the drying on pathogenic bacteria, virus and parasite eggs. The investigation showed, that pathogenic bacteria and virus were reduced with a factor 10(5)--10(6), and that parasite eggs were reduced with at least a factor 200, which is sufficient to secure that grasis irrigated with sewage and pre-served with hot air drying is used without hygienic risks.

Effects of captopril on ambulatory blood pressure, renal and cardiac function in microalbuminuric type 1 diabetic patients.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of Captopril on ambulatory blood pressure, renal and cardiac function and extracellular volume in microalbuminuric Type 1 diabetic patients. DESIGN: Randomized, double blind placebo controlled study of two years duration. SETTING: University clinic. PATIENTS: Twenty-two patients without hypertension. INTERVENTION: Patients received 50 mg Captopril or placebo twice a day. MEASUREMENTS: Ambulatory blood pressure, renal function, extracellular volume, and echocardiographic indices of cardiac function and dimensions were assessed annually. Clinic blood pressure and urinary albumin excretion were measured every 3 months. RESULTS: Twenty-four hour mean arterial blood pressure was unchanged in the Captopril group (mean +/- SD) (baseline 93 +/- 4 and follow up 91 +/- 8 mmHg) and in the placebo group (96 +/- 7 and 97 +/- 10 mmHg, NS). Night/day ratio of blood pressure was unaffected. Glomerular filtration rate was unchanged and renal plasma flow increased in the Captopril (557 +/- 97 and 600 +/- 112 ml min-1) versus the placebo group (574 +/- 85 and 535 ml min-1, p = 0.05). Filtration fraction was reduced in the Captopril versus the placebo group (p < 0.05). Extracellular volume and echocardiographically derived parameters were unaffected. The relative change in day time mean arterial blood pressure in the Captopril group correlated with changes in urinary albumin excretion (Spearmans r = 0.85, p < 0.05) unlike clinic mean arterial blood pressure (r = 0.33, p = 0.35). CONCLUSION: Diurnal rhythm of blood pressure was unaffected by long term administration of Captopril. Renal plasma flow was increased and filtration fraction reduced. A significant association between changes in urinary albumin excretion and blood pressure after Captopril was revealed only by the implementation of ambulatory blood pressure measurements.
