In this paper, the changing nature of nursing research is explored. Examples from nursing research in the field of cancer nursing are used to explore the notion of nursing being a research-based profession. It is argued that there are valid reasons for nurses to be interested not only in the findings of work done by others, but also in being directly involved in the research enterprise.
The paper reviews the research literature on primary nursing and some of the problems in research methodology which have been identified. It sets out the 10 principles which are the basis on which primary nursing will be introduced in an acute elderly care ward. The problem of outcome measures is discussed and a research design proposed.

This paper explores the problems of expressing these principles in terms which make it possible to demonstrate that changes in the way nurses approach their patients and their work have really taken place and suggest some of the research strategies which might be appropriate.

We present a case of mixed follicular-parafollicular carcinoma of the thyroid. Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated the presence of both thyroglobulin and calcitonin within tumour cells. The recognition of thyroid tumours showing this mixed differentiation may have implications for existing concepts of C-cell and follicular cell development in the human thyroid.
