[Hair loss following chronic hemodialysis].

Attention is drawn to the frequent occurrence of loss of hair in chronically dialysed patients. No examinations were undertaken to find the cause of this phenomenon. However it is possible that, besides insufficiently eliminated toxins, hypothyrosis is also involved.

Study of the relationships between pericarditis and osteopathy in chronic haemodialysis.

Statistically significant correlations were demonstrable between the incidence of bone abnormalities due to parathyroid hyperfunction and of pericarditis in 130 patients maintained on chronic haemodialysis. Parathyroid hormone is regarded on these grounds as one of the possible factors accounting for the production of non-infective uraemic pericarditis.

Blood requirement and subtotal parathyroidectomy in patients with chronic renal failure treated with hemodialysis.

Six patients on maintenance hemodialysis underwent subtotal parathyroidectomy. In 3 patients with a "high" blood requirement before operation, a decrease, by at least 50%, was observed, while in 3 others with a "low need" for transfusion subtotal parathyroidectomy had no affect. Subtotal parathyroidectomy should be considered in hemodialysis patients with excessive need for blood transfusions.

Diagnosis and treatment of adult polycystic kidney disease.

The methods applicable to the diagnosis of polycystic kidney disease are reviewed. By assessing the clinical data of 314 patients suffering from adult polycystic kidney disease who had been treated in the 30 years between 1950 and 1979, the importance of conservative therapy and nephrological care is emphasized. The significance of hemodialysis in therapy and the special circumstances of transplantation are discussed. The indication of surgical treatment can be extended in complication-free cases.

Abnormal fat metabolism in chronic renal failure.

The serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels, the cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in the lipoprotein fractions, as also postheparin lipoprotein-lipase activity (PHLA) were determined in 18 haemodialysis-patients with chronic renal failure. Hypertriglyceridaemia and hypocholesterolaemia were found together with increased VLDL- and LDL + HDL-triglyceride and decreased HDL-cholesterol concentrations. At 10 min after administration of heparin, enzyme activity was normal, at 20 min it was abnormally decreased.

[Changes in hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase and lactate dehydrogenase ratio after urologic operations].

In 58 patients subjected to urological surgery a statistically significant correlation was found between the repolarization disorder of ischaemic origin on the ECG and the changes in the alpha-HBDH/LDH ratio. After extensive interventions and particularly in aged subjects, the level of the LDH iso-enzyme of myocardial origin may rise without myocardial infarction. The rise is due to myocardial ischaemia, as proved by the ECG.
