Antioxidant status of interval-trained athletes in various sports.

Muscular exercise results in an increased production of free radicals and other forms of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Further, developing evidence implicates cytotoxins as an underlying etiology of exercise-induced stimuli in muscle redox status, which could result in muscle fatigue and/or injury. Two major classes of endogenous protective mechanisms (enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants) work together to reduce the harmful effects of oxidants in the cell. This study examined the effects of acute physical exercise on the enzymatic antioxidant systems of different athletes and comparison was made to the mechanism of action of three main antioxidant enzymes in the blood. Handball players (n = 6), water-polo players (n = 20), hockey players (n = 22), basketball players (n = 24), and a sedentary control group (n = 10 female and n = 9 male) served as the subjects of this study. The athletes were divided into two groups according to the observed changes of activity of superoxide dismutase enzyme. The antioxidant enzyme systems were characterized by catalase (CAT), glutathione-peroxidase (GPX), and superoxide-dismutase (SOD) and measured by spectrophotometry. An important finding in the present investigation is that when the activities of SOD increased, the activities of GPX and CAT increased also and this finding related to the physical status of interval-trained athletes. Positive correlation between SOD and GPX activities was observed (r = 0.38 females, r = 0.56 males; p < 0.05). We have observed that the changes in the primary antioxidant enzyme systems of athletes are sport specific, and different from control subjects. Presumably, with interval-trained athletes, hydrogen-peroxide is significantly eliminated by glutathione-peroxidase. From these results it can be concluded that the blood redox status should be taken into consideration when establishing a fitness level for individual athletes.

[Physiological characteristics of the health status of workers performing physical labor].

It was examined the physical fitness of 165 male laborer with a special respect to their physical performance. The research covered other factors, as well such as the somatic and circulatory parameters, the maximal oxygen uptake estimated by Astrand, i.e. the aerobe metabolism, the activity and the fitness of the nervous system, the possible proteinuria following loading, the health condition of the examined persons and also certain other factors concerning their way of life. On the basis of the results, the authors established that with the major share of the examined labourers (nine percent of them) it was impossible to carry out the exercises because of contraindication, and in the case of 46 percent the exercises had to be interrupted because of occurring of certain symptoms and exhaustion. The physical performance was unfavourably affected by the fact that the relative majority of the examined persons are overweight, and the lungs function, especially the MVV-value does not reach the predicted level. Only 32 percent has the optimal body weight, while 20-26 percent is overweight. The MVV-value is under the predicted level in the case of 67-76 percent. The estimated relative aerobe capacity reached 84-86 percent of the predicted value with those whose physical performance is moderate. The authors evaluated the accomplished examinations individually as well and summarized them in records of examination. The records were distributed among the factory medical consultants who applied them effectively in the health provision of the examined persons.

[Circulatory and respiratory parameters in children at cardiovascular risk].

Physical performance, pulse rate, blood pressure and respiratory functions (vital capacity, forced expiratory volume and maximal voluntary ventilation) in rest and during physical loading were studied in children of parents having had myocardial infarction under the age of 45. Children with normal and increased skinfold width, and with low resp. normal HDL-cholesterol levels were selected. The most unfavourable respiratory, circulatory and performance results were obtained in obese children with low HDL-cholesterol; significant differences were found in resting heart rate and maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV). In the author's mind, the primary factor is high body fat content resulting in poor physical activity and unfavourable HDL-cholesterol levels. All this forecasts a bad prognosis for adulthood in respect of cardiovascular disease.

Some metabolical aspects of physical exercise under laboratory and field conditions.

Parameters of exercise physiology were studied in nearly 300 subjects to resolve whether these indices were equally suitable under laboratory and field conditions to assess the level of physical fitness and optimum work load. Respiratory gas exchange, heart rate and exercise acidosis parameters were studied. The inference drawn on the basis of the obtained data has been that both the mode and the intensity of the imposed exercise exert significant influence on the variation of physiological parameters. During running either on the treadmill or in the field test, blood lactate levels were comparable, but performances related to these concentrations were not the same. When different modes of exercise were employed, also lactate levels differed between the laboratory and field studies. The performance of patients under or after exercise rehabilitation following acute myocardial infarction by using instrumental monitoring in the laboratory was found to excel that attained during rehabilitation exercise training. Any change in the level of physical fitness can only be reliably followed when physiological parameters are obtained with the same mode of exercise and intensity under the same environmental conditions. Modern training planning of sports and exercise should take into account the data derived from both the laboratory and the field studies concerning cardiorespiratory system and metabolism.

Study of the anaerobic metabolism during the preparation of runners.

The anaerobic threshold of 37 male and 16 female athletes was studied under laboratory conditions and in the field (4.0 mmol.l-1 lactic acid accumulation was considered as anaerobic threshold). Elite sprinters, middle- and long-distance runners and walkers took part in the study. Sprinters reached the anaerobic threshold first and long-distance runners last, walkers performed it with almost the same speed as sprinters. A two-year follow up of the anaerobic threshold of a female long-distance and a male middle-distance runner was analized for the individual estimation of the physical fitness.
