Elaboration of new formulations to remove micropollutants in MSWI flue gas.

This study consists in identifying and testing potential inorganic substitutes to carbon based materials commonly used as adsorbents for the removal of organic pollutants such as dioxins and furans released from Municipal Solid Waste Incinerators (MSWI). Although carbon materials enable to reach the current regulation in terms of dioxins and furans emissions, they exhibit a potential auto ignition risk when present in hot flue gases. Here, the adsorption potential of carbon based products is compared to the one of some inorganic materials. Chlorobenzene was chosen as a reference molecule to compare the removal performance of the different adsorbents. This comparison was based on the determination of the adsorption energies derived from temperature programmed desorption (TPD) experiments. In the first part of this study, five inorganic materials were selected according to their chlorobenzene adsorption performance compared to those of carbon based products currently used to remove micropollutants from MSWI flue gases. In the second part of the study, the influence of the inlet concentration of adsorbate on the adsorption potential of sorbents is investigated. Actually, the organic compound concentration was decreased in order to be closer to those met in MSWI. Furthermore, the adsorption experiments were performed with other adsorbates whose molecular mass or chlorine content are higher. Thanks to these adsorption results a new organic free formulation has been proposed for the removal of micropollutants. Tests carried out on an industrial scale, demonstrated that this product enables to reach the current norm concerning dioxins and furans emissions.

Quantitative electron spectroscopic imaging studies of microelectronic metallization layers.

The combination of focused ion beam (FIB) sample preparation and quantitative electron spectroscopic imaging is an ideal tool for the investigation of layered structures used in microelectronic metallization schemes. In the present work, Si3N4/Cu/Si3N4/SiO2/Si and Al/TiN/Ti/SiO2/Si metallization layers produced by physical vapour deposition are investigated. We apply series of energy filtered images in the low loss region for a mapping of the sample thickness which makes it possible to refine the parameters of the FIB process. We also show how series of energy filtered images in the core loss region can be used to obtain elemental distribution images and chemical bonding information on these samples on a nanometre scale. For materials with a small grain size and/or a strong variation in Bragg orientation, the intensity distribution of the elemental map is strongly influenced by the superimposed Bragg contrast. This detrimental effect can be reduced greatly by using hollow cone illumination, as is demonstrated for polycrystalline Cu. One striking feature observed in Cu layers prepared with FIB is strong, regularly arranged contrast variations caused by subsurface defects in the Cu grains. We suppose that these defects are a consequence of a strong interaction of Ga atoms from the FIB with Cu.

The macrocephaly-cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita syndrome. Long-term follow-up data in 4 children and adolescents.

We present the clinical history and findings in 4 children and adolescents with the association of macrocephaly and cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita (Macrocephaly-CMTC syndrome). This syndrome has recently been delineated within the general group of patients with manifestations of cutis marmorata telangiectatica-Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome as a clinically recognisable entity.

Oculocerebral syndrome with hypopigmentation (Cross syndrome). Report of two siblings born to consanguineous parents.

In this report we describe two siblings, a 17-year-old male and his deceased sister, born to consanguineous parents, and presenting an oculocerebral syndrome with hypopigmentation as first delineated by Cross in 1967. In addition to the cutaneous hypopigmentation, both presented deep mental retardation and spastic tetraplegia with athetoid movements. A remarkable finding in this family is that a third sibling, an otherwise normal 23-year-old male, presents the same hypopigmentation with white-grey hair colour as his two severely affected siblings.

The Opitz hypertelorism-hypospadias syndrome. Further delineation of the spectrum of clinical findings.

In this paper we report three male patients with the Opitz hypertelorism-hypospadias syndrome. In addition to the typical morphological findings, signs of cerebral palsy related to dysmaturity and perinatal adaptation problems were present in two of them. This illustrates that this syndrome is a true multiple congenital anomaly/mental retardation MCA/MR syndrome with great variability in expression of clinical symptoms.

A genetic-diagnostic survey in an institutionalized population of 173 severely mentally retarded patients.

In this report we summarize the findings in a genetic-diagnostic survey of an institutionalized population of 173 severely mentally retarded patients. The etiological study was based on a clinical genetic approach with special attention for dysmorphology and neurological findings. A constitutional disorder, as the direct cause of the severe mental handicap, was found in 75 patients (43.35%). A detailed survey of the different data and findings are given, and compared with the results of previous studies.

The Borjeson-Forssman-Lehmann syndrome. A family study.

The propositus of this report presents a peculiar dysmorphic syndrome associated with severe mental retardation and epileptic attacks. Morphological stigmata include a round, fatty face with large, somewhat protruding tongue, large normally formed ears, relative microcephaly, abundant abdominal fat, dwarfism with hyperkyphosis and short neck. Analogous phenotypic abnormalities were present in the mother and a maternal cousin. The clinical and familial findings in this apparently rare mental retardation syndrome with apparently X-linked dominant or autosomal dominant inheritance with variable expression and penetrance are discussed.

On the influence of hydrophobicity in the SIMS spectra of amino acids in glycerol matrix.

Mass spectrometry is becoming an important method in structure determination of biopolymers. Determination of the nature and the number of the various monomers is an important information for the elucidation of fragmentation patterns. We present here a matrix designed to allow both identification and semi-quantitative measurement of amino acids residues in peptides.

The use of a mathematical model in rhinomanometry.

The authors consider the mathematical model proposed by the Swedish Group (Broms et al.). This model permits the pressure gradient-flow recording as obtained from anterior or posterior rhinomanometry to be converted into a mathematical formula. The model was tested for its mathematical, statistical, and clinical utility with 32 normal test subjects. It is the conviction of the authors, although not totally without reservation, that this is the best mathematical model in existence.

Partial trisomy 18q12, due to intrachromosomal duplication, is not associated with typical 18 trisomy phenotype.

Partial 18q12 trisomy, due to intrachromosomal duplication, was found in a severely mentally retarded boy. The finding of nonspecific dysmorphism in this patient demonstrates that trisomy of band 18q12 is accompanied by neither a full nor an incomplete 18 trisomy phenotype, indicating that this phenotype may be due solely to trisomy of the 18q11 band.
