Observations on crystals found in the intestine of Nematodirus battus during the development of immunity to this nematode in lambs.

Lambs which were given 60000 infective larvae of Nematodirus battus progressively threw off adult nematodes from day 20 onwards. Large, hexagonal crystals appeared in the intestine of the adult nematode at about this time and caused blockage of the intestinal-rectal or -cloacal junction. Lambs which were given 1000-2000 infective larvae did not throw off the infection, and adult nematodes from lambs which had been infected for up to 74 days did not contain these crystals. Chemical, histochemical and x-ray microanalysis tests on the crystals indicated that they are lipoprotein in composition. The crystals arise within the lumen of the nematode and appear to be associated with the development of immunity to this nematode in lambs.

[Suicidal behavior and meterological conditions].

Six hundred and seventy five cases of attempted suicide observed in a resuscitation department were confronted with a certain number of biometeorological factors recorded daily: atmospheric pressure, air temperature, degree of insolation, precipitation, relative humidity, water vapour pressure, wind (speed and direction), hydrometeores, index of solar eruption, density of F2 layer. The confrontation is made for the two days before the intoxication and for the day when suicide is attempted. Parameters are then studied by statistical calculation (calculation of X2 and of the number of degrees of freedom). There does not seem to be any significant relationship, in spite of disconcerting series, between most meteorological factors and the number of attempted suicides observed. However, it is noted that no suicides were recorded during periods of solar eruption, and that there seems to be a marked correlation between suicide and winds, particularly according to their direction. Thus, winds charged with ionised particles seem to coincide with a high rate of self-destruction.

Relapsing polychondritis treated with dapsone.

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare and sometimes fatal disease of unknown cause and pathogenesis. Results of recent studies suggest that it is an immune disorder probably caused by the production of autoantibodies to possibly the mucopolysaccharides. Perpetuation of the cartilage inflammation may be maintained by a proteolytic process. Treatment primarily has been with orally given corticosteroids. Dapsone has been shown to possibly inhibit lysosomal enzyme activity. We present a patient who, to our knowledge, is the first with relapsing polychondritis to be treated successfully with dapsone. The rapid response of the patient's condition to treatment with dapsone suggests an alternative, if not preferred, method of controlling this disease.

[Chylometrorrhea. Clinical manifestation of primary chyle reflux].

Chylometrorrhea may be a manifestation of chylous reflux of great importance when it is the first symptom. The lymphography allows to show the kind of abnormalities: megalymphatics and lymphatics aplasy or hypoplasy. Finally the chirurgical therapeutic of this affection is difficult and must be caution.

The in vitro translation of a terminating signal by a single Escherichia coli ribosome. The fate of the subunits.

A complex was isolated containing one 70 S ribosome bound to the RNA of the f2 bacteriophage in the region of the coat gene. Either the f2 RNA and 70 S ribosome or both ribosomal subunits in this complex were differentially labeled with tritiated lysine or phosphorous 32 RNA. Incubation of this complex in a ribosome-free protein-synthesizing system lacking initiating factor and appreciable nuclease activities allowed the synthesis of coat protein and subsequent termination. Using this techique, it was found that termination resulted in the release of ribosome as subunits. Intermediate in this process is a transient 46 S complex composed of the f2 RNA and 30 S ribosomal subunit, presumably the result of the initial release of the 50 S ribosomal subunit. This 46 S complex subsequently breaks down to a free f2 RNA and 30 S ribosomal subunit. The rate of this latter process is faster in the presence of crude initiating factors. These results are discussed in terms of the mechanism of termination and reading of the intercistronic region.

Correlation of brain levels of barbiturate enantiomers with reported differences in duration of sleep.

The concentrations of R(+)-and S(-)-pentobarbital and R(+)-and S(-)-secobarbital were determined in the brain stem, hypothalamus, cerebellum and cortex of mice after i.v. administration. No regional differences in enantiomer concentration or barbiturate/metabolite ratio were observed to account for the substantial potency differences reported for the enantiomeric forms of pentobarbital and secobarbital. Stereoselective differences in the rate of enantiomer metabolism and in stereochemical fit to the central nervous system receptor are discussed as possible reasons for the differences in duration of action.

Dangers and problems in calculating coefficients of a sum of exponential functions.

The use of the computer in making calculations has led increasingly to the estimation of parameters of exponential functions from point experimental measurements. This involves the use of techniques such as logarithmic transformations and criteria (especially that of the least squares), of which the use is not always justified. Radioactivity measurements raise special problems as they are subject to a statistical distribution of the Poisson type. The authors propose a method based on the statistical criterion of "maximum likelihood" which permits tests of the number of exponentials from point measurements (in practice, this method is valid for one or two exponentials), and also the calculation of parameters more satisfactorily than customary methods.
