[Effect of bovine hypodermosis on various health indicators of milk in first-calvers].

The effect of the last developmental phase of the warble fly (Hypoderma bovis de Greer) larvas was studied as exerted on some health indices of milk in 20 experimental (treated) and 18 control (untreated) first-calvers of the Pinzgau breed at two localities of an area affected by bovine hypodermosis in the period from May to June, 1975. The preparation Hypocid, at a dose of 15 ml per 100 kg of body weight, was applied externally in the lumbosacral region to the experimental animals in November, 1974. Throughout the experimental period (61 days) the milk was repeatedly examined bacteriologically and cytologically, the content of chlorides and the milk electric conductivity were determined. In none of the followed health indices of milk were significant differences in the values obtained from experimental and control first-calvers proved statistically.

Administration, Topical

[Economic significance of the prevention of losses caused by blood-sucking diptera in grazing dairy cows].

It was was demonstrated in an experiment that the blood-sucking dipterous insects adversely affected the efficiency of cows on pasture; these cows showed a significantly decreased milk yield and milk fat percentage. The experiment was conducted in South Bohemia at Chlum u Trebonĕ where seven species of gnats occurred in considerable abundancy, including the largest populations of Aedes sticticus (Meig.), Ae. cinereus Meig., Ae. vexans Meig. and Ae. punctor Kirby, which represented more than 80% of all gnats, and where gad-flies lived at the same time, represented by 18 species of five genera, chief among which were the species Tabanus bromius (L.) and T. maculicornis (Zett.), forming over 60% of all gad-flies. The experiment with 25 control dairy cows of the Bohemian Spotted breed lasted 62 days (July, August 1977). Diethyltoluamide in a 10% water emulsion was used as repellent with which cows were sprayed (with a special spraying apparatus) in 48h intervals. In the experimental (sprayed) cows, compared with the untreated control cows, milk yield per head per day increased by 6.23%, i. e. 43.56 kg milk, and butterfat percentage increased by 11,81%, representing 3.62 kg per head per day. In conversion to fat-corrected milk (milk with a constant 4% fat content), milk yield increased by 9.69%. In conversion to values per 1000 cows on pasture the net value of milk increased by 709.41 Kcs per day. The return rate of the money expended is 1.31 crowns. The results were statistically significant to highly significant.

Losses in milking qualities of dairy cattle caused by mosquitoes and horseflies and reduction of such losses due to use of diethyltoluamide repellent.

An experiment was carried out in South Bohemia, in which 10% water emulsion of diethyltoluamide was used as repellent against bloodsucking Diptera to protect pastured dairy cattle. The repellent was applied by means of a spraying frame and was effective for 30-36 hours. Seven mosquito species and 18 horsefly species were observed to be attacking the cattle. The average number being 120-300 mosquitoes and 50 horseflies per hour, the milking qualities in the cattle decreased by 6.2%, the milk fat content by 11.8%. After converting to milk with average fat content of 4%, the difference in milking qualities between treated and untreated animals was 9.7%.

[Effect of hypodermyiasis in cattle on milk-production indicators in 1st-calvers].

We investigated the effect of hypodermosis on the quantitative and some qualitative indicators of milk from 20 experimental and 18 control first-calvers of the Pinzgau cattle breed. The experiment took place at two experimental localities in mountainous pastures of the Central-Slovakian region. In the experimental animals, treated with Hypocid, the production of milk per dairy cow increased on an average by 115.98 kg, i.e. 24.83%, over the experimental period of 61 days (May, June) with an average invasion intensity of 5.94 larvas in control animals. Milk fat production increased on an average by 7.20 kg, i.e. 34.97%. Production recalculated to FCM milk amounted on an average to 31.61%. The profitability of treating hypodermosis with the Hypocid preparation is expressed by the average savings of 0.40 Kcs per litre of milk per day.

Arbovirus isolations from mosquitoes in South Slovakia.

In the years 1973 and 1975 mosquitoes and some other Diptera (Tabanidae, Simuliidae, Hippoboscidae) were tested for virus. 13,924 mosquitoes, 75 horseflies and 60 blackflies were processed in 1973. Five strains of Tahyna virus were isolated from mosquito species Aedes vexans. 3,378 mosquitoes and 12 sheep keds were tested for virus in 1975. Twelve strains of Calovo virus were isolated from Anopheles maculipennis and one strain of Tahyna virus was obtained from Aedes vexans mosquitoes.

Aedes

Isolation of Bhanja virus from ticks of the genus Haemaphysalis in southeast Bulgaria and presence of antibodies in pastured sheep.

Bhanja virus was isolated from ticks of the genus Haemaphysalis (H. punctata and H. sulcata) collected from sheep pastured in the surroundings of Akhtopol in southeast Bulgaria, and simultaneously blood sera of 58 sheep were investigated in plaque-reduction neutralization test with B lranja arbovirus. All sera contained antibodies to this virus in titres from 1:32 to 1:4096 (geometrical mean titre 1:494). The district of Akhtopol proved to be a natural focus of Bhanja virus.

[Therapy of hypodermyiasis in heifers from the economic point of view].

The test set of animals consisted of sixty one- to two-year-old heifers of the Slovak Spotted and Pinzgau breeds kept at three sites. The Hypocid preparation (containing 40% trichlorphon) in the dose of 15 ml per 100 kg of live weight was applied to these cows by the lavage method in the sacrolumbar region of the spine in 1973. Another group, consisting of 58 heifers, was left untreated as controls. In the experimental period extending over 158, 150 and 120 days at different sites (143 days on an average), weight gains and the health condition of the experimental and control animals were checked in monthly intervals. The average extensity of invasion in the control heifers was 79.31% and the intensity of invasion was 14.58%. The extenseffectiveness of Hypocid (EE) was 97.90% and the intenseffectiveness of the preparation (IE) was 99.99%. The results prove a negative effect of hypodermatosis on the weight gains of untreated heifers and high profitability of the therapy: after subtraction of the costs of therapy the savings were 1.74, 3.88 and 2.25 crowns per kg gain per day (2.62 crowns on an average). The veterinary measures gave the following savings per each crown expended: 2,243.55; 3,066.85 and 922.83 crowns (depending on site).

Dynamics of the natural focus of Tahyna virus in southern Moravia and species succession of its vectors, the mosquitoes of the genus Aedes.

The paper deals with the occurrence of Aedes mosquitoes in southern Moravia and with Tahyna virus infection rates for them in 1972; a comparison of the data from previous years reveals the dynamics of the natural focus under long-term study. A total of 13,204 mosquitoes of the genus Aedes was processed in 122 tests, resulting in 17 Tahyna virus strains isolates. As concerns the valence of the natural focus, the most important was the inundated forest in the Drnholec locality. Infection rates for the mosquitoes were also determined in various microbiotopes of the said locality. A. cinereus, from which Tahyna virus was first isolated in the summer of 1972, was much more numerous than in the preceding seasons studied, indicating its important role as vector of Tahyna virus. The cell line of Aedes albopictus was demonstrated to be susceptible enough for virus detection from mosquitoes collected in the field.

Aedes

On the regularities of distribution of Hypoderma bovis De Geer larvae parasitizing cattle herds in different parts of the range of this warble fly.

The type and parameters of the distribution of the second and third instar larvae of Hypoderma bovis in cattle herds in Czechoslovakia (54 herds, 7233 head), Mongolia (20 herds, 1809 head) and the USSR (48 herds, 4978 head) were studied. A statistical analysis showed a) that in the majority of cases negative binomial distribution serves as a model of the distribution of larvae with sufficient reliability; b) that the regularity of dependence of the distribution exponent k of the negative binomial distribution on the incidence of infestation remains constant in different parts of the range of this warble fly. The latter fact indicates that the regulatory systems limiting the population numbers of this warble fly are associated with host-parasite relationships and do not depend on a complex of conditions specific for various natural zones. In order to understand the regulatory processes in parasite populations it is necessary to study equally the regulatory mechanisms operating primarily on the level of specimens as well as the regulatory systems operating on the level of populations.
