A probabilistic union model with automatic order selection for noisy speech recognition.

A critical issue in exploiting the potential of the sub-band-based approach to robust speech recognition is the method of combining the sub-band observations, for selecting the bands unaffected by noise. A new method for this purpose, i.e., the probabilistic union model, was recently introduced. This model has been shown to be capable of dealing with band-limited corruption, requiring no knowledge about the band position and statistical distribution of the noise. A parameter within the model, which we call its order, gives the best results when it equals the number of noisy bands. Since this information may not be available in practice, in this paper we introduce an automatic algorithm for selecting the order, based on the state duration pattern generated by the hidden Markov model (HMM). The algorithm has been tested on the TIDIGITS database corrupted by various types of additive band-limited noise with unknown noisy bands. The results have shown that the union model equipped with the new algorithm can achieve a recognition performance similar to that achieved when the number of noisy bands is known. The results show a very significant improvement over the traditional full-band model, without requiring prior information on either the position or the number of noisy bands. The principle of the algorithm for selecting the order based on state duration may also be applied to other sub-band combination methods.

Influence of biomaterial surface texture on bone ingrowth in the rabbit femur.

The purpose of this study was to examine both the histologic and the mechanical characteristics of bone apposition to an experimental surface, arc-deposited titanium, in a rabbit model and to compare them with those of four previously studied surfaces: one layer of cobalt-chromium beads, three layers of cobalt-chromium beads, plasma-sprayed cobalt-chromium, and uncoated titanium alloy. Bilateral cylindrical implants were press-fit into the lateral femoral condyles of 70 adult New Zealand White rabbits, which were allowed unrestricted activity and then killed at 6 or 12 weeks. The distal femora were harvested, radiographed, and prepared for either mechanical or histologic evaluation. All of the implants with coated surfaces had significantly greater shear strength than the implants of grit-blasted titanium alloy after both 6 and 12 weeks. After 6 weeks, maximum bone apposition occurred in the beaded surfaces. After 12 weeks, the shear strengths and bone apposition of implants of arc-deposited titanium and of one and three layers of cobalt-chromium beads were significantly greater than those of implants of plasma-sprayed cobalt-chromium and grit-blasted titanium alloy. The histologic studies correlated with the mechanical results. After 12 weeks, the bone apposition and mechanical stability of arc-deposited titanium were similar to those of a single layer of beads. There appeared to be no advantage to multiple layers of beads, and the plasma-sprayed cobalt-chromium and grit-blasted titanium surfaces showed lower shear strength and bone apposition than the other groups.

Relation between weight and body fat's distribution and ambulatory blood pressure in Chinese elderly.

Ninety-five subjects aged 60 years and over underwent casual and ambulatory blood pressure (BP) measurements as well as weight, height, both waist and hip circumferences and both upper arm and thigh circumferences. Most anthropometric variables were significantly correlated with measures of BP. One stepwise regression analysis was applied to reveal that among measures of BP, 24-hour systolic BP had the strongest correlation with waist/hip ratio and awaking diastolic BP the strongest correlation with weight, both waist and hip circumferences and body mass index. Another was used to show that waist/hip ratio was the best overall predictor of systolic BP and weight the best overall predictor of diastolic BP. We suggest that (1) ambulatory BP be superior to casual BP in evaluating effect of weight and body fat's distribution on BP and (2) waist/hip ratio more important than weight in the hypertensive target organ damage and the prognosis of hypertension in Chinese elderly population.

Abnormal renal function in isolated systolic hypertension correlation with ambulatory blood pressure.

Does ambulatory blood pressure correlate with the renal function damage better than clinic blood pressure in isolated systolic hypertension, as has been reported in other target organ involvement in combined systolic/diastolic hypertension? We investigated the correlation of serum beta-2 microglobulin concentration and both 24-h urine beta-2 microglobulin concentration and excretion as measures (suggestive) of glomerular filtration rate and tubular reabsorption, respectively with both ambulatory and clinic blood pressure in 19 health normotensive (68 +/- 4.9 years) and 50 isolated systolic hypertensive elderly individuals (69 +/- 5.4 years). Serum beta-2 microglobulin concentration and 24-h urine beta-2 microglobulin concentration and excretion were higher in the isolated systolic hypertension than in the normotensive group (P < 0.05). In isolated systolic hypertensive patients, 24-h urine beta-2 microglobulin concentration and excretion were related to ambulatory blood pressure (r = 0.32-0.40, P < 0.05), but not to clinic blood pressure; waking systolic blood pressure had the strongest correlation with both 24-h urine beta-2 microglobulin concentration and excretion among derivatives of ambulatory blood pressure (r = 0.35 and 0.40, P < 0.05). We conclude that ambulatory blood pressure, especially waking systolic blood pressure, is superior to clinical blood pressure in predicting renal function impairment, in isolated systolic hypertensive patients.

Uncemented acetabular components. Histologic analysis of retrieved hydroxyapatite-coated and porous implants.

Histologic sections of five hydroxyapatite-coated acetabular components retrieved at autopsy (2 dual geometry and 3 threaded cup designs) were analyzed, and the extent and pattern of bone apposition were compared with that of an uncoated, porous (beaded) dual geometry acetabular cup that had been removed for repeated dislocations. The results show hydroxyapatite and bone apposition most prominent in areas of likely load transmission, primarily around the peripheral rim of the dual-geometry cups and at the peaks of the threads of the screw cups. Hydroxyapatite and bone may have been removed by remodeling from the grooves between the threads. Although no significant wear debris was identified, the screw holes were incompletely covered by bone. The dual-geometry designs generally showed somewhat more bone apposition than the threaded cups, but all implants demonstrated less bone than might have been predicted from radiographs.

Direct interactions between B and T lymphocytes bearing complementary receptors.

A murine cloned Th cell line specific for the antigen conalbumin in the context of self I-A molecules can be activated by low concentrations of soluble antireceptor mAb. By using an antireceptor mAb to shared antigenic determinants on T cell receptors, we have shown that the ability to be activated by soluble antireceptor mAb is an unusual, although not unique, feature of this cloned T cell line. This activation does not involve occult APC, FcR, or interaction between individual cloned T cells, as limiting-dilution analysis shows that individual cells of this clone will grow in the presence of the antireceptor antibody and IL-1 as stimulus. This cloned T cell line is highly immunogenic in vivo, giving rise to antireceptor antibodies that stimulate its growth in both mice and rats. This response is not dependent upon exogenous T cells. Rather, the clone directly interacts with complementary B cells, as shown by the production of mAb in nude mice, and by production of stimulating antireceptor antibodies by purified B cells cultured with cloned Th cells in vitro. Several features of this cloned Th cell line, most especially its ability to be activated, rather than inhibited, by antireceptor antibodies, may account for its striking ability to directly activate B cells bearing complementary receptors. The direct interaction of the cloned Th cell with B cells bearing complementary receptors may serve as a model for receptor-receptor interactions in the generation of both T and B cell repertoires.

Gene for alpha-chain of human T-cell receptor: location on chromosome 14 region involved in T-cell neoplasms.

A human complementary DNA clone specific for the alpha-chain of the T-cell receptor and a panel of rodent X human somatic cell hybrids were used to map the alpha-chain gene to human chromosome 14 in a region proximal to the immunoglobulin heavy chain locus. Analysis by means of in situ hybridization of human metaphase chromosomes served to further localize the alpha-chain gene to region 14q11q12, which is consistently involved in translocations and inversions detectable in human T-cell leukemias and lymphomas. Thus, the locus for the alpha-chain T-cell receptor may participate in oncogene activation in T-cell tumors.

Sequence comparison of human and murine erythrocyte alpha-spectrin cDNA.

The results of hybridization analyses using cDNA probes for mouse and human alpha-spectrin mRNA indicate that a single gene encodes the alpha-subunit of erythrocyte spectrin. Sequencing of the cDNA clones showed that they code for 370 amino acids (aa) covering three repeat domains close to the C terminus of alpha-spectrin. The cloned cDNAs will now permit the isolation of the alpha-spectrin gene and should lead to the characterization of the genetic aspects in human hereditary anemias in which alpha-spectrin has been characterized as the site of the molecular defect.
