Sensitivity of canine Staphylococcus intermedius strains to the phages typing Staphylococcus aureus isolated from man.

98 staphylococci strains isolated from skin lesions of dogs were tested for their morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics. These examinations have proved that the majority of the strains was Staphylococcus intermedius (n = 97), and only one was Staphylococcus aureus. The strains were also tested for their sensitivity to bacteriophages. Most of Staphylococcus intermedius strains (n = 75) could be typed with the set of human phages, typing staphylococci isolated from man. Two phages, 676 and Phi 131 have turned out to be highly active towards a large number of the isolates.

[Haemophilus somnus--properties and isolation].

An account is given in this paper of characteristic parameters of Haemophilus somnus, the aetiological factor of various cattle diseases. Morphological properties of the pathogen are described together with techniques for isolation and identification. Also discussed are its physiological, biochemical, and antigenic properties as well as its present position in taxonomy and the structure of the outer membrane.

Relapse of host leukemic lymphoblasts following engraftment by an HLA-mismatched marrow transplant: mechanisms of escape from the "graft versus leukemia" effect.

Leukemic relapses and graft versus host disease (GvHD) remain major complications following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation for leukemia. We present clinical and laboratory details for an eight-year-old boy who received a T-cell-depleted HLA-mismatched marrow transplant as therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in second remission. Engraftment with donor marrow was prompt and without any acute GvHD. Nevertheless, the patient's original ALL recurred and proved fatal. The patient remained a chimera with persistent donor lymphocytes present at the time of posttransplant relapse and subsequent to treatment with unsuccessful reinduction chemotherapy. In vitro immune studies showed that these leukemic cells could be recognized and destroyed by the donor's lymphocytes. The relapse itself suggests, however, that the donor's lymphocytes did not effectively destroy the patient's histoincompatible ALL cells in vivo following establishment of the chimeric state. Potential mechanisms are presented to account for this presumed "escape" from the postulated "graft versus leukemia" effect.

Acute Disease

[Preliminary results of an atiepizootic field test using EDTA-Na extract vaccine from Escherichia coli strains pathogenic to swine in swine production industrial units].

An anti-epizootic field test was applied to industrialised pig farms in the region of Wrocław, Poland, to test the effectiveness of a pentavalent EDTA (calcium disodium edetate)--sodium vaccine extracted from Escherichia coli strains with pathogenicity to swine. The vaccine had been received from a centre in Berlin-Buch, GDR. The vaccine failed to provide any protection, when orally applied to nursed piglets. However, both morbidity and mortality were reduced and, thus, an anti-epizootic effect on nursed piglets produced, when the vaccine had been injected intramuscularly to the pregnant mother animals, prior to farrowing. In weaned piglets morbidity was sucessfully reduced by both oral as well as intramuscular administration.

[Course of beta-hemolytic E. coli carrier state in piglets during weaning].

The investigations were carried out on 22 sows and 44 piglets (one sow and 2 piglets from each litter). The pigs were divided into 4 groups according to the different additions to their diet during weaning which might have an effect on the carrier state and dissemination of beta-haemolytic E. coli. Group I was given a feed concentrate and separated milk, group II - a feed concentrate and sour milk, group III - a feed concentrate and milk with addition of garlic (200 mg/kg of body weight), group IV - a feed concentrate and milk with addition of vitamin C (20 mg/kg of body weight). The beta-haemolytic E. coli carrier state was examined before starting supplemental feeding (3 times between the 21st and 30th day of life) and after weaning (3 times between the 49th and 56th day of life). The carrier state under discussion was found in 27.2% of sows and in 25% of piglets at the beginning of supplemental feeding, and in 40.1% of sows and 36.3% of piglets during weaning, which means an increase of the number of carriers both among the sows and piglets at that time. Twenty-two strains of E. coli isolated from the carriers belonged to serotypes responsible for colibacteriosis of pigs (O149:K91, K88a, c, O8:K87, K88a, c, O139:K82); 23 strains belonging to E. coli groups O6, O8 and O116 were devoid of K and H antigens, 9 strains possessed a double O antigen (O9, O60: :H-, O117, O120: :H-, O102, O25: :H21). An inhibitory effect of the addition of sour milk to the feed on the intensity of the carrier state of beta-haemolytic E. coli was observed in piglets kept on that diet. The pathogenic strains of E. coli were observed more often in the carrier-piglets (60%), and in the sows predominated the strains of beta-haemolytic E. coli devoid of the K antigens.

[Usefulness of biliary scintigraphy using technetium Tc 99m mebrofenin for detection of disorders of patency of the bile ducts].

The value of the dynamic 99mTc-mebrofenin liver scintigraphy in the diagnosis of extrahepatic bile ducts patency has been assessed. The study included 176 patients in whom an occlusion of bile ducts of any degree was excluded in 111 cases, and bile ducts patency disorders were diagnosed in 65 patients. Time of the appearance of radiolabelled mebrofenin was measured in the selected segments of bile ducts. Time of appearance of radioactivity in the intestines was also noted. Another diagnostic criterion was persistent stasis of radioactivity in the choledochus. Basing on these criteria, patients were classified as "sick" or "healthy". It was possible to exclude the disease in case of negative result with the probability level of 91%. Positive result of scintigraphy points to the impaired patency diagnosis with 96% probability. Technique is simple, free of complications and contraindications. It is also of high predictive value. These features make the procedure particularly useful in the diagnosis of bile ducts patency.
