Color perception under chromatic adaptation: "supersensitivity" with dim backgrounds.

The amounts of 540 nm light and 660 nm light that when mixed result in a yellow (neither reddish nor greenish) percept remain in constant ratio, regardless of the total retinal illumance level of the mixture. A similar result holds if the mixture is superimposed upon a very dim 660 nm adapting field, except that a larger proportion of 540 nm light is required than in the dark (contrary to an effect of receptor desensitization, which would result in a smaller proportion of 540 nm light). Mixtures of 460 and 579 nm lights that give yellow/blue equilibrium percepts show the same effect: under very dim 579 nm adaptation, a larger proportion of 460 nm light is required than in the dark. These results cannot be accounted for by cone sensitivity reduction nor by a postreceptoral restoring effect; they reveal an additional mechanism of adaptation.

[Giant cell thromboangiitis in a patient taking an oral contraceptive (author's transl)].

Pathological examination in a patient who developed an ischemic cerebrovascular accident while taking an oral contraceptive demonstrated widespread lesions in the right and left carotid regions. Histological examination revealed the presence of an obliterating thromboangiitis in the arterial walls, with subendothelial fibrosis of the intima, arterial thrombosis, and a marked giant cell reaction where the lesions were in contact with the internal elastic layer. Immunological and biological anomalies confirmed the inflammatory nature of the lesion with the presence of anti-ethinyl estradiol antibodies in the serum and circulating blood immune complexes. These biological and histological results suggest the immunological nature of the mechanism of origin of the cerebrovascular accident in this case.

[Syphilitic meningo-encephalitis with probable associated arteritis (author's transl)].

A 21-year-old woman was referred for consultation because of sensory and motor disorders of sudden onset but on lung duration. Neurological examination was normal. Lumbar puncture confirmed the presence of a clear liquid meningitis. Arteriography demonstrated segmental arteritis of the anterior cerebral vessels. Systematic serological tests were positive for syphilis. The authors discuss the relation between arteritis and syphilitic meningitis in this young woman taking oral contraceptives.

[Neurological disorders and perhexiline maleate therapy. Clinical study of 10 cases. Neuropathological, pharmacocinetic and biochemical studies (author's transl)].

Ten new cases of perhexiline induced peripheral neuropathies are reported. The authors emphasize the possible association of other neurological disorders: cerebellar symptoms in one case, complex tremor in two other cases, marked decrease of photomotor reflexes in one case and disgeusia in another one. The pharmacocinetic study of 4 cases revealed the presence of a low metabolism of the drug in one of them. Polymorphous inclusions have been seen in Schwann cell and endothelial cell cytoplasm in the three patients with electron microscopic study of the nerves. The pathological study of one case showed the demyelination of spinal cord posterior columns. In another case, who died from hepatic coma, the biochemical study of cerebral lipids revealed the low values of cerebrosides and sulfatides in cerebellum and cerebral white matter.
