Haemorrhagic fever virus with renal syndrome in small rodents in Czechoslovakia.

The antigen of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) was detected in the lungs of the following free-living small rodents trapped in different localities in Eastern Slovakia: Clethrionomys glareolus (2 positive samples of 7), Apodemus flavicollis (1 sample of 24) and Apodemus agrarius (7 positive samples of 66). The virus was first identified by indirect fluorescent antibody (FA) staining using human convalescent serum from a case of epidemic nephropathy (NE) of Scandinavia. The lung suspensions selected according to positive immunofluorescence were inoculated by intramuscular (i.m.) route into suckling rats; the antigen prepared from the lungs of these rats by sucrose-acetone extraction reacted with the prototype human serum in complement-fixation (CF) reaction. The results of the latter assay were in good agreement with those of the indirect FA staining.

Studies on lectins. LVII. Immunofluorescence localization of lectins present in fish ovaries.

The occurrence of endogeneous lectins in the ovaries of four fish species has been studied by indirect immunofluorescence staining with antibodies against individual lectins. Paraffin sections of the ovary of perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) were treated with an antibody against perch lectin. In cryostat sections of the tench (Tinca tinca L.) ovary, the L-rhamnose-specific lectin "I" was detected with a specific antibody. In cryostat sections of both roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) and rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus L.) ovaries, lectins were localized using a single antibody against roach lectin. The isolation of tench lectins is briefly described. In the fish species employed for this study, lectins are associated exclusively with the content and surrounding membrane of cortical vesicles situated within the cytoplasm of maturing oocytes. The positive reaction with lectin antibody was observed almost immediately after the formation of the first cortical vesicles in the peripheral cytoplasm of early previtellogenic oocytes. Their lectin content increases during the later stages when cortical granules fill the whole cytoplasm before moving towards the cell periphery, as the oocyte starts to accumulate yolk. The presence of lectins within cortical vesicles is significant also in view of the polysaccharide content of these structures. In the vitellogenic oocytes lectins seem to move towards the cell periphery and accumulate beneath the plasma membrane. Our observations are discussed in view of the present ideas on the intracellular function of lectins, and with respect to the role of cortical vesicles in fertilization and in post-fertilization modifications of the egg envelopes.

Experimental characteristics of viraemia caused by two strains of tick-borne encephalitis virus in small rodents.

Two strains of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus differing in virulence for subcutaneously (s.x.) inoculated adult white mice elicited different levels of viraemia in small rodents. Strain Skalica of a lowered virulence caused no detectable viraemia in adult Clethrionomys glareolus and only negligible viraemia in adult Apodemus sylvaticus, Microtus arvalis and Pitymys subterraneus species. The virulent strain 204 gave rise to higher levels of viraemia, sufficient for infection of TBE virus vectors-ixodid ticks, in most individuals of the rodent species tested. Viraemia surpassing the threshold values of infectivity for tick vectors was also found in some juvenile and adult Clethrionomys rufocanus, C. rutilus and Micromys minutus. The level of viraemia depended on rodent species and age, and exhibited individual variability.

Bionomics and health importance of fowl tick Argas (Persicargas) persicus (Oken, 1818) (Ixodoidea: ARgasidae).

The fowl tick Argas (Persicargas) persicus occurs in warm areas of Slovakia, where its distribution is limited by the 650-700 mm annual average isohyet and the +8 degrees C annual average isotherm. In Slovakia, larvae hatch from spring to autumn, and nymphal and adult moultings occur chiefly in July and August. Larvae feed for four days, nymphs and adults for less than one hour. The tick develops and reproduces during the warm season in the wild but throughout the year under favourable laboratory conditions in which the life cycle requires 17 months.

Isolation of paramyxovirus type 4 from Oeciacus hirundinis bugs.

Three virus strains were isolated from a total of 1356 Oeciacus hirundinis bugs collected in nests of Delichon urbica in Slovakia by inoculation of chick embryos into the amniotic and allantoic cavities. The strains agglutinated rooster and guinea pig erythrocytes and were identified as paramyxovirus type 4.

Isolation of Tettnang virus from ticks, mosquitoes and small rodents.

Seven strains of Tettnang virus were isolated in Czechoslovakia: 3 from Ixodes ricinus tick nymphs, males and females, one from Dermacentor reticulatus tick females, one from Aedes cantans mosquitoes and two strains from the brains of Clethrionomys glareolus and Apodemus flavicollis small rodents.

Rickettsiae of the spotted fever group in Hungary.

Rickettsiae were detected by haemocyte test in 7.2% of Dermacentor marginatus and 4.7% of D. reticulatus ticks collected in Hungary. Six strains of rickettsiae were isolated from positive specimens. These rickettsiae according to CFR are closely related, probably identical with R. slovaca and they represent the first rickettsiae of the Spotted Fever group found in that country.

Isolation of a virus strain from Argas persicus ticks.

A previously undescribed virus was isolated from Argas persicus ticks collected on sentinel chicken in western Slovakia. The strain was lethal for suckling mice only after intracerebral inoculation. No symptoms were induced in adult mice. The virus strain was insensitive to sodium deoxycholate and resistant to ether treatment. An antigen prepared from the virus did not agglutinate goose or human O erythrocytes. The single strain obtained in 1976 appeared to be untrelated to a large number of known arboviruses when tested by the complement-fixation reaction.
