Neuropeptide changes in the suprachiasmatic nucleus in primary hypertension indicate functional impairment of the biological clock.

Abnormalities in autonomic activity resulting in disturbances of the diurnal rhythm of many physiologic processes were recently revealed in hypertensive patients. These findings suggest deteriorations in the functioning of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), which is known to be the biological clock of mammals. To test this hypothesis, we carried out an immunocytochemical study of the SCN of primary hypertension patients who had died due to myocardial infarction or brain hemorrhage, and compared them with those of individuals with a normal blood pressure who had never had any autonomic disturbances and died from myocardial infarction after chest trauma or from hypothermia. We found that the staining for the three main neuronal populations of the SCN; i.e., vasopressin, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, and neurotensin, reduced by more than 50% in the hypertensives compared with controls. The present data indicate a serious dysregulation of the biological clock in hypertensive patients. Such a disturbance may cause a harmful hemodynamic imbalance with a negative effect on circulation, especially in the morning, when the inactivity-activity balance changes. The difficulty in adjusting from inactivity to activity might be involved in the morning clustering of cardiovascular events.

Combined endovascular embolization of large intracranial arteriovenous malformations and their subsequent surgical resection.

Twelve patients with large arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) were subjected to endovascular embolization followed by surgery. Of the 12 patients, 9 were males and 3 females. Their age ranged from 11 to 37 years. Eleven AVM nidi were more than 6 cm in diameter and one AVM, located in a crucial brain area, was 4 cm in diameter. More than 70% of the AVM masses were excised in 11 of the patients, while under 50% was excised in the remaining patient. Complete excisions of the lesions were achieved in all 12 patients 7-10 days after endovascular embolization. No new major neurological deficits occurred. The results showed that the cerebral AVMs can be effectively operated on after endovascular embolization.

[Quantitative analysis of compound injection of aminopyrine by dual-wavelength linear regression spectrophotometry].

A dual-wavelength linear regression spectrophotometry has been introduced and evaluated. Depending on a group of standard mixture solutions the optimal wavelengths and calibration curve can be determined simultaneously by linear regression method. The deviation of absorption resulting from molecular interaction can be calibrated by this method and the results are more accurate. The validity of this method has been confirmed through its use in the analysis of compound injection of antipyrine with satisfactory recoveries. Results obtained by Kalman filtering (KF), partial least squares (PLS) and target factor analysis (TFA) are also given.

[CT diagnosis in subcortical arteriosclerotic encephalopathy].

51 cases of subcortical arteriosclerotic encephalopathy (SAE) diagnosed by CT were reviewed, the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of CT in SAE were discussed. The pathologic basis of SAE is thought to be arteriosclerotic changes in small penetrating cerebral arteries, which cannot be seen directly by CT, however, the resulting histo-pathologic alterations which include widespread patchy areas of demyelination and small infarcts could be demonstrated on CT image. It is surmised by the authors that these changes in white matter seen on CT are responsible for clinical deterioration of the patients.
