[Detection of heterogeneous Staphylococci by the Autobac system using a nafcillin disk].

Detection of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is still a problem for automated system users. Forty-nine strains were studied--two kinds of tests were performed: the first by using a 1.0 microgram nafcillin disk with the Autobac system, the second by testing an oxacillin disk by diffusion on Mueller-Hinton agar base complemented with natrium chloride incubated at 37 degrees C. Between the two tests, we observed a concordance for 87.8% of the strains. Six strains showed a discrepancy with the reference method. But for five of them, the Light Scattering Index (LSI) showed a decreasing sensibility near for the cut off. Whereas, only one strain is considered as susceptible. The 1.0 micrograms nafcillin disk allow better results than the 5.0 micrograms oxacillin disk in the automated system, Autobac.

Effect of head-neck position on elbow flexor muscle torque production.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the tonic neck reflex affects elbow flexor muscle torque production in healthy, young adults and which head-neck (H-N) positions have the greatest influence. Forty-eight male and female students between the ages of 18 and 35 years volunteered as subjects. Head-neck positions involving the sagittal and horizontal planes and combinations of these were tested. The nondominant hand was used to apply tension to the lever of an isokinetic analyzer under both isometric (static) and isotonic (dynamic) conditions. Peak torque was determined for each H-N position under each condition. Differences in peak torque were elicited more easily from the female subjects than from the male subjects. Head-neck rotation (horizontal plane) appeared to have a greater influence on elbow flexor muscle torque production than movements in the sagittal plane, particularly when movements in the two planes were combined. We concluded, therefore, that H-N position must be considered during rehabilitation of the upper extremity.

[Effect of antibiotics at subinhibitory concentrations on alpha-hemolysin production in uropathogenic Escherichia coli].

The action of subinhibitory concentrations of seven antibiotics (Mezlocillin, Streptomycin, Tobramycin, Chloramphenicol, Tetracycline, Nalidixic acid and Pefloxacin) on the ability to produce alpha-hemolysin are studied on six strains of uropathogenic E. coli. At CMI 2 most of the antibiotics have an inhibitory action. At lower concentrations Pefloxacin, Tetracycline, Streptomycin (in the decrease order) have still an action. Some variations in determinations are observed in function of the choice of the antibiotics and also in function of the stains of E. coli studied.

[Differentiation between micrococci and staphylococci by the study of the sensitivity to nitrofurantoin [N(5 nitro - 2-furfurylidene - 1-amino - hydantoin)]].

The authors have studied the sensitivity to the nitrofurantoïne of 3 328 strains of staphylococci and of 232 strains of micrococci. They have noticed that 100% staphylococci strains are sensitive and that 100% micrococci strains are resistant. They propose this sensitivity test as a simple means of differentiation between micrococci and staphylococci.

[Use of Staphylococcus aureus protein "A" to detect rotavirus in the stools (author's transl)].

The authors have used an anti-rotavirus immunserum fixed to the Staphylococcus aureus protein A to detect this virus in the stools. A study on animal faeces showed a very good agreement in results with ELISA technique. The study on human stools shows a good agreement with ELISA technique and identical results to this technique in comparison with electronical microscopy. The agglutination reaction appears as a quick, simple and specific technique to find out rotavirus in the stools.

[Analytic study of foaming agents in imported beers].

The French consumer expects a natural high-quality drink. It was therefore of interest to ascertain the quality of imported beers (they reached 2,440,000 hl in 1976, or 9.8 f. 100 of total sales) as well as how far their composition complies with present French legislation. Fifteen imported bottled beers were analyzed, from the following countries: West Germany, England, Belgium, Denmark, Luxemburg and the Netherlands. Attempts were first of all made to detect the presence in these beers of iron and cobalt, since both metals are recognized froth-improving agents. The search for cobalt produced negative results for all the beers. On the other hand we found that five of the 15 samples examined were questionable for their iron content (0.56--1.52 mg/l). We than looked for alginates in these imported beers, using a method comprising the following sequence of operations: concentration of the beer, dextrine hydrolysis, alginate precipitation at pH 5 by calcium chloride, treatment of the heated preparation with sodium hexametaphosphate, and colorimetric measurement at 670 nm with a reagent comprising orcinol, ferric sulfate and hydrochloric acid. In most of the 15 imported beers studied, the presence of alginates (up to 16.5 mg/l) was indisputable. The French consumer therefore has a right to expect the composition of foreign beers to comply with the French food laws, especially as regards the absence of frothing agents.
