Housing Tejus contaminated with Salmonella on wire-mesh floors did not have any effect on the degree of contamination. The sensitivity of Salmonella organisms isolated from desert monitors to ampicillin was satisfactory, the serotypes being less sensitive to chloramphenicol, furazolidone, neomycin, streptomycin and oxytetracycline. Intramuscular injection of combined chloramphenicol and ampicillin in tejus and lizards was not successful, nor was oral administration of furazolidone in tortoises. On the other hand, oral treatment with combined ampicillin and chloramphenicol was effective in tortoises.
The gastro-intestinal colonization resistance to Escherichia coli was assessed in individual CBA/Rij, C3H/StZ and Swiss/Cpb:SE mice. Gastro-intestinal transit time was determined by feeding small steel balls and x-ray examination of sequentially collected faeces. No correlation was found between transit times measured on 3 subsequent days, nor between them and colonization resistance.

2 sets of data are given of biotyping the Enterobacteriaceae from the faecal flora of SPF rats and cats housed with different isolation arrangements. The method is presented as an evaluation of the isolation efficiency of laboratory animals. Biotypes which were determined on almost every occasion belonged to the resident flora of the animals while those found occasionally represented contamination. Contaminating bacteria are cleared from an SPF breeding unit by colonization resistance and the continuous efflux of animals from the unit. A parameter of isolation efficacy is the number of different biotypes determined in time. With optimal isolation arrangements a stable bacterial flora of permanently colonized biotypes is obtained in the animals.

In seven groups of teju-lizards and tortoises, twenty-five tejus and thirty tortoises were found to be harbouring Salmonella. The serotypes of the Salmonella organisms harboured by these animals were identified. The animals positive for Salmonella were treated with 75 mg. of ampicillin and 250 mg. of chloramphenicol per animal daily. Of the animals treated for five days, twenty out of twenty-three (both tejus and tortoises) became free from Salmonella. The strains of Salmonella isolated after treatment all were adequately sensitive to the antibiotics administered. All animals, i.e. two tejus and seven tortoises, became negative following treatment for ten days. In seven strains of Salmonella isolated from tejus prior to treatment, sensitivity to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin and terramycin was determined. Sensitivity to the three first-named antibiotics ranged from adequate to moderate, sensitivity to terramycine being slight or absent. In five out of six cases, serotypes other than those isolated prior to treatment were isolated from those animals which continued to be positive after treatment.

The oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) in the cecal contents of conventional rats, germ-free mice, and mice with a Colonization Resistance Factor flora (CRF-mice) was investigated. By using animals that were anaesthetized for a longer period of time, we attempted to eliminate the disturbing influence of oxygen. In addition, measurements were made under anaerobic conditions. For the rats, the ORP values reached a more or less constant level after about 30 min following the insertion of the electrodes. The mean ORP at that time was -458 mV (SD = 45 mV). The mean ORP values for the mice showed a more gradual reduction than was found in the rats. The curves leveled off at about 100 min following the insertion of the electrodes. The mean ORP values 100 min after electrode insertion were: germ-free mice, + 3 mV (SD = 39 mV); CRF-mice, -554 mV (SD = 29 mV). In rats, the ORP value decreased after death; no decrease was observed in mice. No difference was found in the values obtained when measuring under anaerobic or aerobic conditions after death.
