Age and psychosis in degenerative dementia.

Among psychiatric inpatients with primary degenerative dementia, those with psychotic symptoms (N = 20) were older than those without (N = 20) (t = 3.48; p < 0.001). Persecutory delusions were the most frequent psychotic phenomena. Duration of dementia overlapped, but scores on the Global Deterioration Scale and the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia were lower in the psychotic group after correcting for age. The limited literature concerning demographic and clinical correlates of psychosis in dementia is reviewed; the age difference noted is consistent with two other reports.

Overview: the psychology of grandparenthood.

Grandparenthood as a separate and unique phase in the life cycle has received moderate attention in the literature. The literature is reviewed and found to focus on social aspects, intrapsychic aspects, and symbolic aspects of grandparenthood. Lacking is a cohesive definition of this phase in terms of its particular developmental tasks, conflicts, developmental arrests, and maturational course. Suggestions are made for how grandparenthood might be viewed in the context of important growth and development of individuals over their life cycles.

Helping families cope with Alzheimer's disease.

Many families of patients with Alzheimer's disease seem to undergo an intense five-stage reaction process and to face several specific problems when coping with the onset and progression of this debilitating illness. Mental health professionals must provide families with education about Alzheimer's disease and with supportive guidance, so that family members will successfully work through their reactions and be able to mourn their loved one, make necessary decisions for his care, and reestablish family equilibrium. The authors describe the reaction process and how mental health professionals can help during each stage, present a case example of a family coping with the disease, and discuss the specific problems that families must face and work through.
