Emergence of on-off intermittency in systems nonlinearly coupled to a nonequilibrium bath.

Approximate analytic solutions are presented for the dynamics of a classical oscillator nonlinearly coupled to a nonequilibrium bath. It is shown that as a result of the combined effect of the nonlinear coupling, which leads to nonlinear friction and multiplicative noise in the description of the reduced system, and the nonthermal properties of the reservoir, which give a specific self-sustained character to the coarse-grained oscillator, on-off intermittency can occur. Properties of this phenomenon, such as the universality in the length distribution of the laminar phase and the qualitative changes caused by the presence of additive noise, can be traced back to characteristics of the starting microscopic model.

Immunoprophylactic trial with combined Mycobacterium leprae/BCG vaccine against leprosy: preliminary results.

In an attempt to find a vaccine that gives greater and more consistent protection against leprosy than BCG vaccine, we compared BCG with and without killed Mycobacterium leprae in Venezuela. Close contacts of prevalent leprosy cases were selected as the trial population since they are at greatest risk of leprosy. Since 1983, 29,113 contacts have been randomly allocated vaccination with BCG alone or BCG plus 6 x 10(8) irradiated, autoclaved M leprae purified from the tissues of infected armadillos. We excluded contacts with signs of leprosy at screening and a proportion of those whose skin-test responses to M leprae soluble antigen (MLSA) were 10 mm or more (positive reactions). By July, 1991, 59 postvaccination cases of leprosy had been confirmed in 150,026 person-years of follow-up through annual clinical examinations of the trial population (31 BCG, 28 BCG/M leprae). In the subgroup for which we thought an effect of vaccination was most likely (onset more than a year after vaccination, negative MLSA skin-test response before vaccination), leprosy developed in 11 BCG recipients and 9 BCG/M leprae recipients; there were 18% fewer cases (upper 95% confidence limit [CL] 70%) in the BCG/M leprae than in the BCG alone group. For all cases with onset more than a year after vaccination irrespective of MLSA reaction the relative efficacy was 0% (upper 95% CL 54%; 15 cases in each vaccine group). Retrospective analysis of data on the number of BCG scars found on each contact screened suggested that BCG alone confers substantial protection against leprosy (vaccine efficacy 56%, 95% CL 27-74%) and there was a suggestion that several doses of BCG offered additional protection. There is no evidence in the first 5 years of follow-up of this trial that BCG plus M leprae offers substantially better protection against leprosy than does BCG alone, but the confidence interval on the relative efficacy estimate is wide.

[Effect of the extraction of LPS (R) on the demonstration of the serological response in acute brucellosis by immunoblotting].

In order to establish the possible influence of Brucella melitensis rough strains protein extracts contamination using LPS (R) in the immunoblotting evaluation of serologic response, we have studied sera samples from 41 patients with acute brucellosis before treatment was started and also from 62 healthy individuals (control group). A whole-cell B. melitensis 115 strain extract with an without LPS (R) was used. Extraction was carried using ether-chloroform of oil-phenol. Overall, more than 50% of patients showed an antibody response (protein bands 85, 53, 50, 47, 41, 38 and 28 kD) to both antigenic products. Less than 6.4% of the control group sera showed response to any of these protein bands. There were no significant differences in the frequency of response development against these proteins using the two antigen types. However, there was some disagreement when each individual band response was compared to its homologous band.

[Entero-gastric reflux after distal stomach resection--an animal experiment study].

UNLABELLED: The experiments were carried out in 125 Wistar rats. The entero-gastric reflux was estimated quantitatively with reference to the bilirubin and the cholic acid (radiolabeled by C 14). The animals were submitted to distal partial gastrectomy in groups after Billroth I operation, after Billroth II operation with and without enteroanastomosis, as well as Billroth II operation with enteroanastomosis and vagotomy. RESULTS: The statistical difference was significant between Billroth I and Billroth II operation with clear smaller reflux in Billroth I. The added enteroanastomosis decreased or increased the reflux of some animals at a time. The additional vagotomy reduced the number of the anastomotic ulcer.

An immunoblotting study of serologic response in patients with acute brucellosis.

Immunoblotting was used to study the evolution of serologic response in 35 patients with acute uncomplicated brucellosis. Although no definite pattern was seen in serologic response, patients whose disease had existed for longer periods before being diagnosed had antibodies against the different bands more frequently than did patients with a shorter first-symptom-diagnosis interval.
