Factors related to attitude towards retirement among French preretired managers and top executives.

This study aimed to investigate the determinants of a favorable attitude towards retirement among 175 male executives aged 63 or 64 and still professionally active. Findings were based on a questionnaire for attitude as well as a variety of other examinations designed to reveal the determinants involved. Multiple regression analysis indicated that four possible determinants are significantly related to a favorable attitude toward retirement: a good cardiovascular status, a poor state of vision, a high degree of life satisfaction and an important amount of time devoted to leisure activities. The relationship between commitment to work and attitude towards retirement was not found to be significant.

[Health assessment of managers 63 and 64 years old. (Results of the first step of a prospective study on the adaptation to retirement) (author's transl)].

A cross-sectional study has been carried out on a group of 180 male preretired managers and top executives in order to investigate their health status. This study is the first part of a longitudinal survey undertaken to analyze the adjustment to retirement among managers. These 180 subjects were 63 or 64 years old, still working at full time. The study included a standardized medical questionnaire, a medical examination as well as various biological, physiological and psychological measurements. For each main ICD categories of diseases, the prevalence rate was assessed; for each subject two indices of global morbidity were established. Furthermore, some risk factors of cardio-vascular diseases were assessed.

Spontaneous variations in level of arousal among aged individuals. Correlations with functional abilities and mental performances.

The aim of this study was to assess whether spontaneous interindividual variations in arousal level appreciated by telemetric recordings of physiological variables were related to mental performance and functional ability in institutionalized aged subjects. The sample studied was made up of 18 subjects (16 women and 2 men) aged 82-97, living in an old age home in Paris. Telemetric recordings of EEG, EKG, EMG and EOG were obtained over 8-hour periods, during the subjects' normal daily activity schedule. The Stockton Geriatric Rating Scale (SGRS), Benton's Visual Retention Test (VRT) and the Trail Making Test (TMT) were independently used to assess behaviour and mental performance of these aged persons. All correlations between telemetric data and psychological evaluations (the psychometric tests as well as the rating scale) were highly significant, even once the influence of the cultural level was controlled.

Can a protracted stay in the tropics permanently lower basal metabolic rates of European expatriates?

The basal metabolic rate (BMR) of 57 male and female French subjects, aged between 50 to 80 years, all in good health and normally active, was measured. All subjects had been long-term residents of the humid tropics and had returned to France at least one year earlier. Two groups, individuals born in France and those born in the humid tropics, were compared to paired randomized control groups of subjects born in France who had never lived outside France. Despite important inter-individual differences, there was a general trend towards a persistent drop of the BMR in both groups of former residents in the tropics.
