Forty-seven patients with irreversible nasal obstruction due to inferior turbinate hypertrophy were treated by cryosurgery, the short and medium term results having been clinically evaluated. Permanent good results in nasal breathing were achieved in 83% of the patients. Failures are mostly related to turbinates hypertrophy due to nasal allergy. The combination of cryosurgery and nasal septoplasty, in cases of hypertrophy associated with deformities of nasal septum, gives an excellent result. Cryosurgery of hypertrophic nasal turbinates is a simple, safe, and reliable procedure to improve nasal breathing in cases of nasal turbinate hypertrophy.

The incidence of potentially toxic serum levels (greater than or equal to 400 ng/ml) was analyzed in a group of 196 monitored patients on a standard dosage regimen (75-225 mg/day) of several antidepressants: imipramine, amitriptyline, nortriptyline, maprotiline and clomipramine. Mean incidence was 12%. The maximum antidepressants serum levels in these patients ranged from 403 to 1,776 ng/ml. The drug/metabolite ratio was 1.5 +/- 0.7. Only in 23% of the cases did the clinical symptoms allow us to suspect the presence of potentially toxic serum levels. The factors that may contribute to the appearance of high serum levels were analyzed; these are: association of neuroleptic agents to the antidepressant therapy, advanced age and administration of doses above 2.5 mg/kg/day. In 64% of the patients, the clinical criteria suggested the need for a reduction in the dose, with a mean value of 42%.
The serum levels of imipramine (IMI) and its active metabolite desipramine (DMI) were monitored in 90 children with primary nocturnal enuresis. Ages ranged between 5 and 14 years. Serum concentrations were determined in 21 children at 24 h after administration of a dose of 75 mg and once when steady state had been reached, 12 h after the last dose; a good correlation was seen between the total levels (IMI + DMI) on those two occasions (r = 0.81; p less than 0.01). This serves as a basis to predict the steady-state levels of IMI + DMI reached in an individual patient. In the remaining patients the serum levels of IMI + DMI were determined at steady state. Dosage regimens were adjusted individually to obtain a favorable response with regard to the frequency of enuresis and to the possible occurrence of side effects. Good correlation was established between the serum concentrations of IMI + DMI at steady state and the frequency of enuresis, with a favorable response being obtained for levels greater than 80 ng/ml. Monitoring of serum levels leads to better compliance with the regimen throughout treatment.
In hydrocarbon fermentation, the efficiency of hydrocarbon uptake by cells is one of the keys to the economical production of single-cell protein. This work is concerned with characterization of cultures with two liquid phases for understanding the hydrocarbon uptake process by cells. Batch cultivation of Candida lipolytica was carried out in shaking flasks and in a tower fermentor with motionless mixers. Microscopic observation and cell and hydrocarbon concentration distribution in batch cultivation showed that some cells are attached to the large oil drops and others are free from them. Interfacila tension between oil and water and Sauter mean drop size decreased as cultivation proceeded. On the basis of the experimental results, the process of hydrocarbon uptake by cells is discussed.
Candida lipolytica (strain ATCC 8662) was grown on a simple defined medium with n-hexadecane as the main carbon source under batch fementation conditions. The relative importance of the cells growing in the aqueous phase on the overall kinetics was studied. The effect of interfacial tension, unoccupied interfacial area, and pseudosolubility on the specific growth was also studied. Results are presented and discussed here.
