Corneal changes, hyperkeratosis, short stature, brachydactyly, and premature birth: a new autosomal dominant syndrome.

We report on an autosomal dominant syndrome consisting of unique corneal epithelial changes, diffuse palmoplantar hyperkeratosis, distal onycholysis, brachydactyly, short stature, premature birth, and dental problems. This condition has been present in seven persons in three generations of one family. Corneal biopsies demonstrate mild dysplastic changes in the epithelium. Skin biopsies show hyperkeratosis and acanthosis. In both eye and skin specimens, results of stains for polysaccharides, amyloid, and tyrosine were unremarkable. Roentgenograms of the hands show short distal phalanges, short 4th metacarpals, and constriction of the heads of some of the metacarpals. In three of four affected relatives, a variable medullary narrowness is seen. In mode of inheritance, clinical appearance, and/or associated defects. This syndrome appears to differ from previously reported conditions that include palmoplantar hyperkeratosis and/or corneal changes.

Mucous membrane involvement in generalized pustular psoriasis: Report of three cases and review of the literature.

Pustular eruptions on both skin and mucous membranes occur in the various forms of generalized pustular psoriasis. Three patients with generalized pustular psoriasis also had an eruption on the tongue resembling geographic tongue; one patient had sterile conjunctivitis. Histologically, the spongiform pustule of Kogoj is common to lesions of both skin and mucosa. We suggest that generalized pustular psoriasis be considered one of the mucocutaneous syndromes.

T and B lymphocyte subpopulations in children.

T and B lymphocyte subpopulations were examined in the peripheral blood of children using the E and EAC rosette assays. Children under 18 months of age were found to have a decreased percentage of E-binding (T) lymphocytes and an increased percentage of EAC-binding (B) lymphocytes compared to older children (18 months to 10 years) and adults. The absolute number of E-binding and EAC-binding lymphocytes was increased in children under 18 months of age.

Mitogenic properties of a calcium ionophore, A23187.

A23187 is a carboxylic antibiotic that selectively transfers calcium, magnesium, and other divalent cations across biologic membranes. This ionophore was found to produce morphologic blast transformation, DNA synthesis, and mitosis in human lymphocytes. Several hours of ionophore-cell contact were necessary to produce optimal mitogenesis. The effects were highly dependent on the presence of extracellular calcium and much less dependent on extracellular magnesium. Lanthanum chloride prevented the development of the observed ionophore effects. Results are consistent with the hypothesis that under physiologic conditions the interaction of antigens or mitogens with specific receptors at the lymphocyte membrane initiates events that alter calcium fluxes and result in increased cytoplasmic calcium. Increased cytoplasmic calcium is postulated to play a central role in the generation of surface-to-nuclear signals that initiate the process of DNA synthesis and cell division.
