Survey of the Anopheles maculatus complex (Diptera: Culicidae) in peninsular Malaysia by analysis of cuticular lipids.

Anopheles maculatus Theobald sensu lato is a species complex now consisting of eight sibling species; An. maculatus is still represented by two cytologically distinct forms; i.e., the widely distributed sensu strictu or B, and E from southern Thailand and adjacent areas in northern Malaysia. Cuticular lipid profiles in conjunction with principal component analysis was used to separate An. maculatus form E from sensu stricto form B in a preliminary survey of the An. maculatus complex at five locations spanning peninsular Malaysia. The relative rank orders, from the areas of the five gas chromatographic peaks used to determine lipid differences for specimens from peninsular Malaysia, matched well with those from cytogenetically identified colony specimens of An. maculatus forms B and E. The two-dimensional principal component pattern of specimens identified as form E was highly clumped, which indicated that very similar cuticular lipids were present within this putative malaria vector. Both forms coexisted in peninsular Malaysia, but form E may be dominant except in the south.

Removal of the eye with socket ablation. A limited subtotal exenteration.

Following enucleation or evisceration, the wearing of a prosthetic eye may be impractical, impossible, or undesirable. We describe herein 10 patients for whom a prosthesis was not feasible and who therefore underwent removal of the eye with extirpation of the conjunctiva, tarsi, and lid margins, followed by lid closure. The procedure as originally described is suitable for a wide range of disorders. Modifying the technique to incorporate simultaneous removal of the conjunctiva, tarsi, and lid margin together with enucleation of the globe permitted the use of the operation in the treatment of patients with ocular and conjunctival surface malignant neoplasms. Although the procedure does not replace simple enucleation of the globe or exenteration of the orbit, it is useful under certain circumstances.

Cuticular lipid differences between the malaria vector and non-vector forms of the Anopheles maculatus complex.

Two chromosomal forms (E and F) of the Anopheles maculatus Theobald complex were distinguished by gas-liquid chromatographic (GC) analysis of cuticular lipids in association with a multivariate principal component analysis. The GC chromatogram obtained from n-hexane extracts of individual specimens showed no consistent qualitative differences in normalized peak areas between forms. Of the seventeen consistent peaks, five were found to be quantitatively different between forms at a high (99.5-99.95%) level of statistical confidence. Relative ratios of these five quantitatively different GC peaks were used as criteria to distinguish single specimens as either form E or form F. Chemical structures of the five GC peaks were assigned by both electron impact and chemical ionization gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis. The first three peaks, which were always doublets, were partially resolved saturated and mono-unsaturated free fatty acids; the other two peaks were n-alkanes. Principal component analysis substantiated that the vector form E has very similar cuticular lipid profiles and is well separated from the non-vector form F.

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy: bilateral orbital involvement spanning 17 years.

We report a case of sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) with a right inferior orbital mass. The mass was excised and, on histopathologic examination, was believed to be a "lipogranuloma." Thirteen years later, the patient was seen at our institution for what appeared to be a recurrent orbital mass. Orbital tumors were removed from the right superior and inferior orbit and from the left superior orbit. Histopathologic examination of these tumors at this institution and at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology showed them to be SHML. The original biopsy tissue obtained in 1969 was reexamined and found also to be SHML. The clinical and histopathologic features of this disease are discussed.

Cerebrospinal fluid masquerading as tears.

We have described a 14-month-old white boy with a laceration of the right upper eyelid draining CSF. Careful evaluation, including computerized tomography, revealed a penetrating injury of the right frontal fossa. Determination of the glucose level in fluid draining from upper eyelid lacerations aids in the diagnosis of CSF fistulas.

Olfactory discrimination of individual littermates in rats (Rattus norvegicus).

Adult male rats (Rattus norvegicus) were trained in a Y-maze to discriminate the presence of a littermate from its absence. Transfer of training in subsequent tests indicated that (a) the animals were capable of distinguishing among individuals when relatedness and familiarity were held constant, (b) this ability was not due to training, and (c) their performance was based solely on odor cues. The results are discussed in relation to social behavior in rats.

Thermal sclerostomy and posterior lip sclerectomy: a comparative study.

Eighty-two consecutive filtering procedures (47 thermal sclerostomies and 35 posterior lip sclerectomies), performed by senior staff and residents at the Duke University Eye Center between 1972-1976, were reviewed and compared. Operative and early postoperative complications were more common with the posterior lip sclerectomies. However, late postoperative complications were equal for the two groups, with cataracts occurring in approximately 30% of both categories. A final intraocular pressure of 20 mm Hg or less, with or without medication, was achieved in 66% of the thermal sclerostomies and 85.7% of the posterior lip sclerectomies. Residents did not perform as well as the senior staff when using thermal sclerostomy (60% vs. 70%, respectively), but performed equally well when using posterior lip sclerectomy (85.7% for both groups). In comparing black and white patients, the final intraocular pressures were the same in both groups.
