Artificially stimulated ejaculation in the brain dead patient: a case report.

Cutaneous vibratory stimulation and rectal probe electroejaculation are highly successful methods of obtaining semen in the anejaculate patient. We report a case in which spermatozoa were retrieved in a brain dead man by artificially stimulated ejaculation. The specimen was cryopreserved to be used at a later date in combination with assisted reproductive techniques.

Gamekeeper's thumb: ulnar collateral ligament injury.

Injury to the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb, once a common chronic occupational injury occurring in British gamekeepers, is now most frequently an acute sports-related injury in skiers, football players and other athletes. Differentiation of complete versus partial tears of the ligament is crucial because the treatment for complete tears is surgical. Radiographic evaluation, while important, has a limited role. Partial ligamentous tears, or those associated with uncomplicated avulsion fractures of the proximal phalanx, can be adequately treated by the family physician using simple shortarm thumb spica casting.

Office orthopedics: thumb spica casting for scaphoid fractures.

Fracture of the scaphoid bone of the wrist is a common orthopedic problem and is accurately diagnosed by determining the mechanism of injury based on the history, performing a specific physical examination maneuvers and interpreting radiographic findings. Skill in the application of the thumb spica cast enables the family physician to provide appropriate and definitive care for many of these patients.
