Airway pressures in an asymmetrically branched airway model of the dog respiratory system.

A computer model of the mechanical properties of the dog respiratory system based on the asymmetrically branching airway model of Horsfield et al. (11) is described. The peripheral ends of this airway model were terminated by a lumped-parameter impedance representing gas compression in the alveoli, and lung and chest wall tissue properties were derived from measurements made in this laboratory. Using this model we predicted the respiratory system impedance and the distribution of pressures along the airways in the dog lung. Predicted total respiratory system impedances for frequencies between 4 and 64 Hz at three lung volumes were found to compare quite closely to measured impedances in dogs. Serial pressure distributions were found to be frequency-dependent and to result in higher pressures in the lung periphery than at the airway opening at some frequencies. The implications of this finding for high-frequency ventilation are discussed.

Sex education: evaluation and recommendations for future study.

This article briefly outlines the current rationale, goals, and scope of sex education programs. The available research on the effectiveness of these programs is reviewed. A majority of the program evaluation studies in sex education suffer from poor research design. Often no formal outcome assessment has been undertaken. However, the information available largely supports the notion that sex education can produce certain beneficial results, specifically in the areas of attitude, experience, and knowledge change. Recommendations for future research stress the need for more rigorous outcome evaluation, long-term follow-up, comparison of differing methods, and more detailed subjective evaluations. Of special note is that despite the fact that sex education is purported to be a preventive approach by most theorists in the area, prevention-oriented outcome assessments are conspicuously absent in the literature.

Program evaluation in sex education: outcome assessment of sexual awareness weekend workshops.

The results of an outcome assessment of a growth-oriented sex education program are reported. The evaluation project attempted to overcome flaws of existing sex education research by explicitly delineating goals and by incorporating both a rigorous experimental control group design and quasiexperimental cohort comparisons. A Sex Questionnaire (covering sexual knowledge, attitudes, and behavior) was administered to the participants of three weekend workshops at the tiem of registration and 1 month later. Overflow resistration for one workshop permitted the random selection of a no-program control group. Results supported inferences of workshop effectiveness in meeting program goals in the areas of attitude and behavior change, but not with regard to increasing sexual knowledge. Implications for development and evaluation of sex education programs are discussed.
