Infrequent orgasms in women.

Out of a sample of 2,425 gynecological patients aged 21-40 and married for at least one year, three groups were selected according to the frequency of coital orgasm. The first, orgastic, group contained 1,266 (52.2%) orgastic women, the second group included 466 (19.2%) patients with infrequent orgasms, and the third group consisted of 151 (6.2%) patients whose infrequent orgasms were felt by the examinees as distressing. Significant differences were found between the three groups concerning family environment and childhood, level of education and professional standing, sexual development and life, and in the incidence of psychopathological symptoms. It appears that the insufficient capacity of many women to attain regular orgasms in sexual intercourse is caused by several factors of both biological and psychosocial nature.

History of sexology in eastern Europe.

Out of the eastern european countries the greatest development of medical sexology occurred and a new independent branch of medicine came about in the following three: Czechoslovakia, Poland and Soviet Union. The focus of the article will be dedicated to the state of sexology in the mentioned three countries.

Sexuality of women with anorexia nervosa.

The sexual development and life of 30 adult women with anorexia nervosa and of 50 control women was investigated using a structured interview and 3 sexological questionnaires. Heterosexual development was found to be normal in the initial stages, but psychosexual adaptation in adulthood was impaired. Primary or secondary insufficiencies of sexual life were found for 80% of the anorectic patients. Biological and psychosocial factors may participate in this unfavourable state. Discussion of sexual problems should be part of the process of treating women with anorexia nervosa.

Adolescent

[Anorgasmic women].

The authors compare the results of a sexuological investigation in a group of 1266 gynaecological, married and sexually orgastic patients with a group of married gynaecological patients who during marriage did not experience orgasm during coitus. Statistically highly significant differences between the two groups were found in 18 factors. Based on an analysis of these differences the authors express the view that sexual dysfunction in the sense of "inhibited female orgasm" has a multifactorial background, whereby biological as well as psychological factors are involved.

Adult

[Biological and experimental markers of sexual aggression].

Forty men who committed sexual offences with a varying extent of aggressiveness were examined by a series of psychological tests, phalloplethysmography and electroencephalography. The plasma testosterone level was assessed and in indicated cases the karyotype. Frequently in the delinquents an abnormal course of psychosexual development was revealed, disorders of sex life, the presence of sexual deviations and atypical EEG findings. The extent of aggression of the offence correlated significantly with younger age of the delinquent and the result of the phalloplethysomographic examination. Prediction of future aggressive behaviour of a subject is difficult even when modern examination methods are used.

[Neurotic symptoms in obese women].

In a group of 129 obese women with a body mass index (BMI) above 25 by means of questionnaire N5 the frequency and intensity of neurotic symptoms was examined. It was revealed that in the sub-group of 61 probands with pathological obesity (BMI above 30) both values were highly significantly higher (p less than 0.01) than in 68 women with simple obesity (BMI 25-30). Among ten most frequent neurotic symptoms in obese women above all depressive and vegetative symptoms predominated.

[Changes in sexual reactivity in young women in Czechoslovakia].

In a group of 2425 gynaecological patients during their stay in the spa of Frantiskovy Láznĕ the authors examined by interviews the marital sex life of the patients. They divided them into sub-groups by decades of their birth year (1911 to 1970). In women born between 1961 and 1970 they recorded a marked rise in the number of women who experienced only rarely orgasm during coitus (26%). This change was explained by the action of stressing factors of the social environment. The authors express the view that changes in the orgastic capacity of women are rather than sexual appetence a sensitive and useful indicator of psychological influences.

Adult

[Sexual development in obese women].

By means of an interview and the questionnaire "Heterosexual Development of Women" [HDW] the authors subjected to sexuological examination 129 obese women aged 20-50 years with a body mass index above 25. As regards the time when overweight developed 29 women developed obesity during the prepubertal period and in 100 of the women obesity developed during adolescence and later. It was revealed that the sexual development of obese women was normal. The mean values in the HDW questionnaire in both subgroups with a different period of development of overweight were all within the normal range.

Adult

[Sexual development and life of Czechoslovak women born between 1951 and 1970].

By means of interviews in Frantiskovy Láznĕ data on the sexual development and life of 586 married gynaecological patients born between 1951 and 1960 and 276 women born between 1961 and 1970 were obtained. As compared with data from 1563 patients born in individual decades between 1911 and 1950, it was revealed that the acceleration of sexual development proceeded. The mean age of the first sexual intercourse declined further and in the sub-group born between 1961 and 1970 is was 17.8 years. In this sub-group, however, the percentage of women who experienced during intercourse orgasm only rarely increased markedly. The value of 26% is the highest of all decades investigated since 1911. The authors express the hypothesis that this negative change in the sexual life of contemporary young women is due to a number of stressing factors ensuing from the present social environment.

Adult

[Sexual development and life of obese women].

The authors examined by means of a structured interview and four questionnaires (heterosexual development of women, sexual activity of women, sexual function of women and N5 assessing the incidence and intensity of neurotic symptoms 100 obese women, mostly aged 21-40 years, who had a regular sex life. 73 of them had BMI values of 22 to 30. In the remaining 27 morbid obesity was involved with BMI values above 30. In the group as a whole the course of sexual development and life did not differ markedly from that of average women. A retarding trend with lower values in questionnaires on sexual activity and sexual function was found in women with primary and morbid obesity. In these sub-groups the number and intensity of neurotic symptoms was elevated. Their intensity in the group as a whole was significantly higher than in the ordinary population.

[Hysterical personality and sexuality of the female].

The investigation involved 30 hysterical women, who were interviewed and who completed four questionnaires relating to: psychosexual development; attitude towards sexuality; sexual activity; and reactivity. Dysharmonic sexual development, and low levels of activity and reactivity in their sexual life was revealed. Contrasted with other groupings of female psychiatric patients, from a sexual point of view the female hysterical personality presents a special psychological case.

Changes in the premarital and marital sexual life of Czechoslovak women born between 1911 and 1970.

Using the interview method, three sexologists examined, over a period of 36 years, the sexual development and life of 2,425 gynecological patients who were sent to Franzensbad for after-treatment of conditions following gynecological inflammations or surgery. They had all been married at least 1 year and when interviewed were 20-40 years old. The average age at the time of the first coitus dropped from 20.75 among the women born in the decade 1911-1920 to 17.8 among those born between 1961 and 1970. As far as premarital sexual life is concerned, the number of young women with numerous coital partners before marriage has continuously increased since 1931. About 50% of young brides today had premarital sexual contacts with 1-3 partners. Over the decades between 1921 and 1970, the number of women with 4-10 premarital coital partners has increased from 1% to 12%. Among women born in the decade 1961-1970, there has been a distinct increase in those who achieve coital orgasm only rarely to 26%. This is the highest percentage of this type of insufficient sexual reactivity since 1911. This unfavorable change in sexual life of young married women is discussed in the context of negative social environmental factors in Czechoslovakia today. The study concludes with the opinion that frequency of coital orgasm in women is a sensitive indicator of social environmental influences in a given society.

Adolescent

[Educational level and psychosexual adaptation in women].

By means of a structured interview the author examined the course of sexual development and life in 862 young married women born after 1951. Women with primary education (n = 425) started full sex life significantly sooner than women with a higher education (n = 437) Contrary to probands born in 1911 to 1950, no major differences were found in the member of coital partners before marriage, in the coital activity and reactivity. The author confirms the hypothesis that differences in sexual development and life between different social groups diminish markedly.

Klinefelter's syndrome: sexual development and activity.

Determination of plasma testosterone in 105 patients with Klinefelter's syndrome 16--45 years of age revealed that at each 5-year age interval values of male hormone were lower than in a control group of 25 normal adolescents and 85 fertile and potent men. Analysis of heterosexual development by means of the HTDM Questionnaire in 110 patients with Klinefelter's syndrome age 21--40 years, who were examined mainly for sterility and signs of imperfect somatosexual development, revealed a distinct retardation of sociosexual development compared to that of 325 normozoospermic men from sterile marriages. For eight out of 12 items on the HTDM Questionnaire the differences were statistically significant. Examination by means of the SAM Questionnaire in these two groups revealed that the sexual activity of examinees with Klinefelter's syndrome was significantly weaker than that of fertile and potent men. For 15 out of 18 items on the SAM Questionnaire the differences were statistically significant.
