Data reconciliation with uncertain models

Data reconciliation has proven to be an effective technique for providing frequent, accurate and consistent "best estimates" of plant operation data. However, in almost all the proposed techniques until today, the mathematical model of the process has been considered as exact. In point of fact, this hypothesis is uncommon and frequently the models used are uncertain. This paper proposes a new technique of data reconciliation which is able to exploit the knowledge about the uncertainties of the model with regard to which the reconciliation is done. It leads to the solution of a classical quadratic optimisation problem subject to constraints. The originality of the proposed technique is to use penalty functions for solving this problem and to weight each constraint with regard to their uncertainties.

[Early auditory evoked potentials in normal sheep and in sheep with trypanosomiasis].

In human and animal clinics, the early auditory potential has been used for a long time in the detection of lesions through the internal auditory way in the cerebral trunk. The aim of this work tries to determine if this non invasive test is apt to show up and to follow the evolution of lesions at the level of auditory way in the cerebral trunk of sheep with trypanosomiasis. According to the human technic, the list of the early auditory potential was realized against ten healthy sheep and ten sheep with trypanosomiasis (Trypanosoma brucei brucei) at the nervous phase. No significant anomalies exist in the sheep with trypanosomiasis. The results are discussed.

[Essential and iatrogenic gingival hyperplasia. Its morphology and significance].

11 specimens were carried out in patients with idiopathic gingival hyperplasia (3 cases), gravidic hyperplasia (1 case), iatrogenic hyperplasia (5 cases after cyclosporin A administrated in patients with cardiac grafts, 2 cases after treatment by Adalat). By optic microscopy, the deep collagen base is thickened, associated sometimes to an inflammatory process. By histoenzymology, the fibroblasts have high activities of their oxidative enzymes and also of the enzymes of protein synthesis. The electron microscopy corroborates the numerous globular fibroblasts with well-developed rough endoplasmic reticulum. These results prove the main role of fibroblasts in these lesions and the etiopathogenesis of this hyperplasia is discussed.

[Diffuse gingival plasmacytoma. Apropos of an case with an immunofluorescence and electron microscopy study].

A 5.1/2-year-old girl presented with an isolated diffuse gingival hypertrophy and an abnormal mobility of teeth (alveolysis on roentgenograms). The diagnosis of a plasmacytoma was suspected after pathological and immunohistological examinations of a gingival biopsy. Plasma cells were secreting monoclonal immunoglobulins (heavy chain IgA and light chain lambda), quite different from polyclonal secretions of a reactive plasmacytosis. The electron microscopic study demonstrated polymorphic plasma cells (well-differentiated, dysplastic or undifferentiated cells). The isolated nature of this tumor was confirmed by biological tests and radiological investigations. The extremely rare diffuse gingival locations of extraosseous solitary plasmacytomas was proved by a review of the published litterature. The evolution of such gingival tumors is unknown. It seems to be variable, and, perhaps, diffuse myelomas may develop later on (as in other sites of extra-osseous solitary plasmacytoma).

[Routine urinary oxypurine assays for the detection of xanthine-oxidase deficiency (author's transl)].

Xanthine-oxidase deficiency should be suspected whenever hypouricaemia coexists with hypouricuria and hyperoxypurinuria. In 18 months. Two new cases of xanthinuria were detected by routine urinary oxypurine assay among 10,000 patients where uricaemia was systematically tested. The xanthine-oxidase deficiency was associated with Hodgkin's disease in one case and with uncomplicated pregnancy in the other.

[The abnormalities of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in uremia. A study in 20 hemodialyzed patients (author's transl)].

The glucose tolerance and serum lipids pattern were studied in 20 hemodialyzed patients after 8 and 12 hours of fasting. They all were non-obese uremics under 40 years of age. The test was conducted according to the nutritional conditions of the protocol of de Gennes. Fasting hyperglycemia and an abnormal glucose tolerance test were observed in 75% of the patients. The basal serum insulin levels were increased in 80% of the cases. 40% of the population studied exhibited significant hypertriglyceridemia after 12 hours and 65% after only 8 hours of fasting. Thus, this protocol was useful for detecting abnormalities in the metabolism of triglycerides in hemodialyzed patients with few baseline disturbances. The normal levels of serum triglycerides at 12 hours could be explained by 1) the relatively young age of the population studied and 2) dialysis with glucose free solutions.

Two successive pregnancies in a woman with xanthinuria: unexpected increase in serum uric acid levels.

Two successive pregnancies were observed in a patient with xanthinuria. In each of them, maternal serum uric acid (SUA) level rose progressively during the third trimester, reaching a subnormal value just before delivery. The level of UA was slightly higher in arterial cord blood than in maternal blood. There was no difference between levels in arterial and venous cord blood. It is suggested that xanthine oxydase may be present in the placenta.

[Adaptation of a technic of rapid titration of acetate in biological fluids by gas chromatography (author's transl)].

The proposed technic is a rapid method of measurement of acetatemia by simple deproteinisation of plasma, then analysis by gas chromatography. The plasma is routinely saturated with acetate in formic acid solution in order to permit greater sensitivity of reading of usual or subnormal concentrations. The chromatography column is filled with chromosorb WAW impregnated with 15 per cent didecyl phtalate and 2 per cent phosphoric acid. The stationary phase of intermediate polarity permitting satisfactory stability of the chromatograms.
