Comparison of the effects and kinetics of UV photolysis and four advanced oxidation systems (ozone, ozone/hydrogen peroxide, ozone/UV radiation and UV radiation/hydrogen peroxide) for the removal of simazine from water has been investigated. At the conditions applied, the order of reactivity was ozone < ozone/hydrogen peroxide < UV radiation < ozone/UV radiation and UV radiation/hydrogen peroxide. Rate constants of the reactions between ozone and simazine and hydroxyl radical and simazine were found to be 8.7 M-1s-1 and 2.1 x 10(9) M-1s-1, respectively. Also, a quantum yield of 0.06 mol.photon-1 was found for simazine at 254 nm UV radiation. The high value of the quantum yield corroborated the importance of the direct photolysis process. Percentage contributions of direct reaction with ozone, reaction with hydroxyl radicals and direct photolysis were also quantified.

Atrazine (6-chloro-N-ethyl-N'-isopropyl-1,3,5-triazinedyl-2,4-diamine) was treated with ozone alone and in combination with hydrogen peroxide or UV radiation in three surface waters. Experiments were carried out in two bubble reactors operated continuously. Variables investigated were the ozone partial pressure, temperature, pH, mass flow ratio of oxidants fed: hydrogen peroxide and ozone and the type of oxidation including UV radiation alone. Residence time for the aqueous phase was kept at 10 min. Concentrations of some intermediates, including deethylatrazine, deisopropylatrazine and deethyldeisopropylatrazine, were also followed. The nature of water, specifically the alkalinity and pH were found to be important variables that affected atrazine (ATZ) removal. Surface waters with low alkalinity and high pH allowed the highest removal of ATZ to be reached. There was an optimum hydrogen peroxide to ozone mass flow ratio that resulted in the highest ATZ removal in each surface water treated. This optimum was above the theoretical stoichiometry of the process. Therefore, to reach the maximum removal of ATZ in a O3/H2O2 process, more hydrogen peroxide was needed in the surface waters treated than in ultrapure water under similar experimental conditions. In some cases, UV radiation alone resulted in the removal of ATZ higher than ozonation alone. This was likely due to the alkalinity of the surface water. Ozonation and UV radiation processes yield different amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Combined ozonations (O3/H2O2 and O3/UV) lead to ATZ removals higher than single ozonation or UV radiation but the formation of intermediates was higher.

Dorsal hippocampal theta rhythm (theta) and extracellular unit activity from CA1 pyramidal layer were recorded in awake guinea pigs, both during standing and during walking on a conveyor belt at increasing speeds. Amplitude, frequency and rhythmicity of theta increased linearly with the movement speed. In this preparation we found the same three types of unit discharge patterns that have been described in anesthetized rats in the presence of spontaneous or induced hippocampal theta: type 1, rhythmic at theta frequency and phase-locked with theta; type 2, discharging non-rhythmically but phase-locked with theta; and type 3, discharging at random. Furthermore, all units modified their firing pattern when the animals walked, either by increasing their rhythmicity and/or phase-locking with theta or by increasing their firing frequency. During walking, some type 3 units changed into type 2 or type 1, type 2 units changed to type 1, and type I increased their rhythmicity. Consequently, the unit discharge rhythmicity and phase-locking with theta increased with the speed of movement. The mean rate of neuronal discharges increased linearly as a function of walking speed. In this paper we show that the progressive spectral theta changes determined by the intensity of movement are concomitant with the increase in rhythmicity of hippocampal cells. Moreover, the firing rate of these cells, and the amplitude, frequency and rhythmicity of theta, increased linearly as a function of walking speed, suggesting that neuronal excitation may be basically responsible for these changes in theta properties.
We report a case demonstrating a late increase in acetaminophen concentration after ingestion of Tylenol Extended Relief (extended-release acetaminophen; McNeil Consumer Products) along with drugs known to slow gastrointestinal motility. Coingestants that slow gastrointestinal motility are known to affect the interpretation of serum drug concentrations. However, this case illustrates potentially significant differences between extended-release and immediate-release acetaminophen and demonstrates an exception to the current manufacturer recommendation for the use of the Rumack-Matthew nomogram in this setting.

The aim of this work was to compare the benefits and problems of low molecular weight heparin use in chronic hemodialysis, compared to conventional heparin. We studied 35 patients that received low molecular weight heparin (Enoxaparine, molecular weight 4000) during 115 consecutive hemodialysis procedures and conventional heparin during the subsequent 35 procedures. We assess the heparin dose, partial thromboplastin time before dialysis and at 3 and 120 min during the procedure, arterio-venous fistula compression time, clot formation in the circuit and residual volume of filters. Median total dose of conventional heparin was 6289 U (range 3000-10000) compared to 5555 U (range 2000-8000) of low molecular weight heparin. When the dose was calculated per kg of body weight, it was lower for low molecular weight heparin than for conventional heparin (87.8 U (range 33-100) vs 100 U (range 50-176)). Partial thromboplastin time achieved was lower with low molecular weight heparin, compared with conventional heparin, at 3 (64.26 vs 125.2 sec) and 120 min (39.1 vs 84.45 sec). Clot formation, arteriovenous fistula compression time and residual volume of filters were similar for both types of heparin. It is concluded that a single dose of low molecular weight heparin simplifies anticoagulation during hemodialysis, modifies less the partial thromboplastin time and does not alter filter re-utilization.
We present three patients developing pleural empyema after sclerotherapy of esophagic varixes. In all of them, the presence of persistent fever syndrome following the sclerotherapy, along with radiological images of pleural overflow, were the starting point of the patient's study. In the emergency esophagogrames, the extravasation of contrast outside the esophagus could not be confirmed. The treatment, which must be started as soon as possible, was based in conservative measures (drainage, antibiotics and a proper nutrition), given the poor general condition of these patients. Despite all these measures, the prognosis is poor, with two of the three patients dying despite the administration of the treatment. In conclusion, although its frequency is very low, pleural empiema is an extremely severe complication of the sclerotherapy of esophagic varixes. If this complication is suspected, the prognosis depends on a treatment that must be started as soon as possible.

The requirement of Ca(2+) for growth and nitrogen fixation has been investigated in two strains of heterocystous blue-green algae (Anabaena sp. and Anabaena ATCC 33047). With combined nitrogen (nitrate or ammonium) or with N(2) under microaerobic conditions, Ca(2+) was not required for growth, at least in concentrations greater than traces. In contrast, Ca(2+) was required as a macronutrient for growth and nitrogen fixation with air as the nitrogen source. Addition of Ca(2+) to an aerobic culture without Ca(2+) promoted, after a lag of several hours, development of nitrogenase activity and cell growth. Provision of air to a microaerobic culture in the absence of Ca(2+) promoted a drastic drop in nitrogenase activity, which rapidly recovered its initial level upon restoration of microaerobic conditions. Development of nitrogenase activity in response to either Ca(2+) or low oxygen tension was dependent on de novo protein synthesis. The role of Ca(2+) seems to be related to protection of nitrogenase from inactivation, by conferring heterocysts resistance to oxygen.
Three siblings without a known familiar history of chronic inflammatory disease of the intestine suffered Crohn's disease. They were the 3rd, 4th and 8th siblings of a family of 8 siblings. The onset of the disease and its course were similar in all three patients. Considering the form of familial presentation and the possible influence of environmental factors in this type of patients, a review is made of the influence of these factors in accordance with the clinical patients' evolution.
The elemental and molecular composition, pigment content, and productivity of a phycoerythrin-rich nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium-an Anabaena strain isolated from the coastal lagoon Albufera de Valencia, Spain-has been investigated. When compared with other heterocystous species, this strain exhibits similar chlorophyll a, carotene, and total phycobiliprotein contents but differs remarkably in the relative proportion of specific phycobiliproteins; the content of C-phycoerythrin amounts to 8.3% (versus about 1% in the other species) of cell dry weight. Absorption and fluorescence spectra of intact phycobilisomes isolated from this Anabaena sp. corroborate the marked contribution of phycoerythrin as an antenna pigment, a circumstance that is unusual for cyanobacteria capable of fixing N(2). The pigment content of cells is affected by variations in irradiance and cell density, these adaptive changes being more patent for C-phycoerythrin than for phycocyanins. The Anabaena strain is clumpy and capable of rapid flocculation. It exhibits outdoor productivities higher than 20 g (dry weight) m day during summer.
