Response of two populations of holm oak (Quercus rotundifolia Lam.) to sulfur dioxide.

Experiments were carried out with seedlings of Quercus rotundifolia Lam., an evergreen schlerophyllous tree typical of the Spanish Mediterranean climate environments. Fruits were collected in two distant (800 km) populations located in the center (southern Spain) and northern border (northern Spain) of the area of distribution of the species. One-month-old potted plants were grown for 130 days in an enriched atmosphere of SO2 (0.23 ppm, 14 h/day) in controlled (growth chamber) conditions. Both northern and southern plants underwent a significant decrease in growth rate as a consequence of the treatment. Even so, plants appear to be quite resistant to SO2 compared with either more temperate or more productive species. The southern population was more sensitive to the treatment, as reflected by the bigger decrease in both growth and photosynthetic rates. Differences in resistance appear to be related to the biogeographic origin of the populations studied, which underlines the importance of biogeographic aspects in studies of resistance to air pollutants.

The TD6 (Aurora Stratum) hominid site. Final remarks and new questions.

The study of the faunal and lithic assemblage (including almost a hundred human fossil remains) recovered from the Aurora stratum-TD6 level of the Lower Pleistocene cave site of Gran Dolina (Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain) has allowed us to answer some important questions concerning the debate about the earliest evidence for human occupation of Europe. However, it has also started new discussions about some geographical, ecological, and economic aspects of this earliest occupation. The nature (definitive or ephemeral) of the first occupation, as well as the model for the arrival of the Acheulean (Mode 2) in Europe are also issues for discussion.

Lignin biodegradation by the ascomycete Chrysonilia sitophila.

The lignin biodegradation process has an important role in the carbon cycle of the biosphere. The study of this natural process has developed mainly with the use of basidiomycetes in laboratory investigations. This has been a logical approach since most of the microorganisms involved in lignocellulosic degradation belong to this class of fungi. However, other microorganisms such as ascomycetes and also some bacteria, are involved in the lignin decaying process. This work focuses on lignin biodegradation by a microorganism belonging to the ascomycete class, Chrysonilia sitophila. Lignin peroxidase production and characterization, mechanisms of lignin degradation (lignin model compounds and lignin in wood matrix) and biosynthesis of veratryl alcohol are outstanding. Applications of C. sitophila for effluent treatment, wood biodegradation and single-cell protein production are also discussed.

Removal of non-biodegradable organic matter from landfill leachates by adsorption.

Leachates produced at the La Zoreda landfill in Asturias, Spain, were recirculated through a simulated landfill pilot plant. Prior to recirculation, three loads of different amounts of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) were added to the plant, forming in this way consecutive layers. When anaerobic digestion was almost completed, the leachates from the landfill were recirculated. After recirculation, a new load of MSW was added and two new recirculations were carried out. The organic load of the three landfill leachates recirculated through the anaerobic pilot plant decreased from initial values of 5108, 3782 and 2560 mg/l to values of between 1500 and 1600 mg/l. Despite achieving reductions in the organic load of the leachate, a residual organic load still remained that was composed of non-biodegradable organic constituents such as humic substances. Similar values of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) were obtained when the landfill leachate was treated by a pressurised anoxic-aerobic process followed by ultrafiltration. After recirculation through the pilot plant, physico-chemical treatment was carried out to reduce the COD of the leachate. The pH of the leachate was decreased to a value of 1.5 to precipitate the humic fraction, obtaining a reduction in COD of about 13.5%. The supernatant liquid was treated with activated carbon and different resins, XAD-8, XAD-4 and IR-120. Activated carbon presented the highest adsorption capacities, obtaining COD values for the treated leachate in the order of 200mg/l. Similar results were obtained when treating with activated carbon, the leachate from the biological treatment plant at the La Zoreda landfill; in this case without decreasing the pH.

[Evaluation of the treatment of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo with the DHI-S questionnaire].

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a recurrent chronic disease and its handicap is usually underestimated. The aim of this study is to determine the impact of the treatment by Epley maneuver on short-term BPPV-related quality of life. Forty-two individuals with BPPV were included: 39 with posterior canal affected, 2 with the lateral canal and one with the anterior canal. Diagnosis was established if a consistent clinical history was found and Dix-Hallpike test (DHT) in cases with canal posterior involvement. Subjects with positive DHT were treated by a single Epley maneuver and were recommended to avoid supine for the next 48 hours. The BPPV relapses were investigated at 7th and 30th day post-treatment. BPPV-associated quality of life was evaluated by the Dizzness Handicap Inventory Short-form (DHI-S) at days 1st and 30th post-treatment. Total and partial scores for emotional, physical and functional subscales were compared by Wilcoxon test for paired samples. Dix-Hallpike test was found positive in el 59% individuals (23/39), and 41% cases did not required any treatment. Among 23 patients treated with Epley maneuver, DHT was found negative in 90% at 30th day follow-up. Mean and standard deviation of the total scores obtained in the DHI-S at the first day were 19.22 +/- 9.66 in the DHT positive-patients and 19.79 +/- 10.14 in the whole group (DHT positive or negative). These scores significantly decreased to 10.84 +/- 10.99 at 30 days post-treatment (p = 0.002 and p = 0.001, respectively). In conclusion, the DHI-S is a specific health questionnaire able to assess BPPV-related health and the effectiveness of treatment.

[CYFRA 21.1 cytosol levels in lung adenocarcinomas. Correlation with other clinico-biological parameters].

INTRODUCTION: Cyfra 21.1 are soluble cytokeratin 19 fragments present in several biological fluids. The aim of this work was to study cyfra 21.1 cytosolic levels in lung adenocarcinomas and their possible correlation with other clinical-biological parameters. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Cyfra 21.1 was determined, using an immunoradiometric assay (CIS BioInternational. France), in 58 tissue samples of lung adenocarcinomas patients. Other parameters included in the study were the following: clinical stage, histological grade, ploidy, S-phase cellular fraction, as well as cathepsin D, CA 125 and hyaluronic acid levels in cytosols. Likewise, AH, erbB2 oncoprotein, CD44s, CD44v5 and CD44v6 levels in cell surfaces were assayed. RESULTS: Cyfra 21.1 cytosolic levels oscillated between 24.8 and 6,774 ng/mg prot. (median 1,147.5) and were higher (p:0.00074) than those observed in 16 normal lung samples of the same patients. We did not observe any statistically significant differences in cyfra 21.1 values when clinical stage, ploidy, S-phase and histological grade were considered. When lung adenocarcinomas were classified according to cyfra 21.1 positivity, using 1,499 ng/mg prot. as cut-off, which represents the 75th percentile of the whole group, we noted that positive cases had higher levels of cathepsin D (p:0.00218), cytosolic hyaluronic acid (p:0.02947), erbB2 protein (p:0.06272) and CA 125 (p:0.07243) than negative carcinomas. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest the possibility that high cytosolic cyfra 21.1 levels could be associated with a poor outcome in lung adenocarcinomas.

[CD44s Cell surface expression in 55 lung adenocarcinomas. Negative correlation with tumor size and CA125 cytosolic levels].

INTRODUCTION: CD44s belongs to a family of cell adhesion molecules involved in cell adhesion, migration and cell-extracellular matrix interactions. In this work we attempt to study CD44s expression in lung adenocarcinomas and its possible correlation with other clinicobiological parameters. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using an EIA, cell surface CD44s levels were determined in 55 lung adenocarcinomas, classified according to clinical stage, histological grade, ploidy and cellular S-phase fraction. CA125 cytosolic concentrations were also assayed. RESULTS: Forty two adenocarcinomas (76.4%) showed CD44s concentrations > 80 ng/mg prot, and did not differ significantly from those observed in 16 normal samples (93.7%). There were no differences in CD44s expression when clinical stage (I: 24/28, II: 6/9 and III: 12/17), lymph node involvement (N = 245/29, N+: 18/26), ploidy (diploid: 3/5, aneuploid: 32/39), histological grade (I: 6/7, III: 18/26) and cellular S-phase (> 8.8%: 24/31, < or = 8.8%: 17/24) were considered. Positive CD44s tumors had lower CA125 (p: 0.0072) cytosolic levels and a reduced tumor size (p: 0.0093). CONCLUSIONS: CD44s expressions in lung adenocarcinomas did not correlate with any clinicobiological parameters, but there was a negative correlation between this and reduced tumor size and lower CA125 cytosolic levels.

High-flow priapism as a complication of a veno-occlusive priapism: two case reports.

The presentation of two cases of veno-occlusive priapism, in patients of 36 and 58 years, in whom the different medical and surgical techniques employed, failed. The suspicion that high-flow priapism had been provoked by said surgical intervention was confirmed by bilateral arteriographs of the pudendal artery. The treatment, selective embolisation of the affected cavernosal artery with reabsorbable material, led to a rapid return of penile detumescence.

Neonatal lupus erythematosus related to maternal leukocytoclastic vasculitis.

Neonatal lupus erythematosus (NLE) is an autoimmune disease whose major findings are skin lesions and congenital heart block. Affected infants have maternal, transplacentally acquired, autoantibodies to Ro/SSA, La/SSB, or U1-RNP antigens. Anti-Ro/SSA is the predominant autoantibody, present in about 95% of cases. Mothers of babies with NLE may be asymptomatic initially or may have Sjögren syndrome, lupus erythematosus, overlap syndrome or, uncommonly, leukocytoclastic vasculitis. When evaluating a young woman with a cutaneous leucocytoclastic vasculitis, dermatologists should be aware of the possible presence of antibodies related to NLE. If any patient suffering a disorder related to NLE becomes pregnant, testing for autoantibodies and close obstetric prenatal care with fetal echocardiogram is necessary. In cases of fetal bradycardia, treatment with dexamethasone or betamethasone should be considered, as these drugs are accessible to the fetal circulation.

[CA125 cytosolic levels in lung adenocarcinomas. New biological aspects].

INTRODUCTION: CA125 is a useful serum tumor marker in patients with non-mucinous ovarian cancer, but there may be high serum levels in other malignant tumors, among them the non-small cell lung cancers. We decided to study the cytosolic levels of CA125 in lung adenocarcinomas and compare them with pS2, CD44s, CD44v5 and CD44v6, all of them with biological interest in this subtype of lung carcinomas. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study group included 55 patients (33 males) having lung adenocarcinomas. CA125 and cytostolic pS2 were measured by both IRMAS methods (CIS. Biointernational. France). The concentrations of CD44 standard (CD44s), CD44v5 and CD44v6 on cell surfaces were dosed by EIAS (Bender Diagnostics. Austria). Clinical stage, ploidy and S-phase cellular fraction were also taken into account. RESULTS: In the 55 lung adenocarcinomas, cytosolic CA125 levels ranged between 1 and 225 U/mg prot. (median 80.5) and were higher (p:0.002) than those observed in 16 normal lung tissues from the same patients (r: 1-32.5; median 6.7 U/mg prot.). When the 25th (7.2 U/mg prot.) and 75th (320 U/mg prot.) percentiles were used as clinical cut-offs, we found that the cases with high antigenic levels showed a greater positivity for CD44v6 (p:0.002) and a reduced positivity for CD44 standard (p:0.053). Likewise, they showed a tendency towards being pS2 + (p:0.09) more frequently. CONCLUSIONS: Our results lead us to draw the following conclusions: 1) Cytosolic CA125 levels in lung adenocarcinomas were higher than those observed in normal tissues from the same patients. 2) Lung adenocarcinomas with high cytosolic CA125 concentrations had a greater positivity for CD44v6, a reduced positivity for CD44s and were more frequently pS2 +. These associations support the usefulness of the cytosolic CA125 levels as an indicator of poor outcome in this subtype of lung carcinomas.

Wheezing during the first year of life in infants from low-income population: a descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent wheezing (RW) plays an important role in the morbidity and mortality of children during the first year of life in developing regions and its actual incidence in those areas is virtually unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study describes the occurrence of wheezing during the first year of life in a birth cohort of 188 infants followed monthly and living in a poor urban area in Santiago de Chile. This study showed that 80.3 % of the infants in the cohort had one or more wheezing episode during the first year of life, 43.1 % had RW (3 or more wheezing episodes), 44.1 % had their first wheezing within the first three months of life and 13.3 % had pneumonia (PN). Having one or more episode of wheezing in the first three months of life was the main risk factor for suffering from RW during the first year and RW was a significant risk factor for having PN. CONCLUSIONS: This study found a high prevalence of RW in infants from a low-income population during the first year of life with the disease starting very early in their lives, progressing with more frequent episodes and being significantly associated to PN, particularly in the first 6 months of life.

Prepubertal rats are more resistant to ischemic renal injury and recover more rapidly than adult rats.

Bilateral clamping of renal pedicles during 60, 75 or 90 min was used to characterize the evolution of ischemic acute renal failure (ARF) in prepubertal rats. To verify the existence of age-conditioned differences in the evolution of ARF, adult rats were exposed to 40, 60 or 75 min of clamping. After 7 days, survival rate was significantly better in young than adult rats for identical times of clamping (89 vs. 35% for 60 min and 69 vs. 35% for 75 min). Young rats largely died within the first 24 h following ischemia while the risk of death extended until the 4th day after ischemia in adult rats. Peak values of serum urea nitrogen and creatinine were observed on the 1st and 3rd day after ischemia in young and adult rats, respectively. In young rats, these markers of renal function returned to normal on days 5 and 6 whereas they remained elevated at the end of the study in adult animals. Growth curves of young rats paralleled those of sham-operated animals from the 3rd day of clamping whereas adult rats did not even reach the initial weight at the end of the study. Analysis of kidneys obtained 7 days after clamping revealed more severe histopathological lesions in adult rats as well as a higher proliferative activity (10-40 times the value of sham-operated animals versus 2-4 times the control value in young rats). Our findings indicate that kidneys from young rats are more resistant to ischemia and recover more quickly from the ischemic insult. Therefore, the experimental model of ischemic ARF is clearly different in young and adult rats.

Cytosolic levels of neuron-specific enolase in squamous cell carcinomas of the lung.

To study the behavior and possible correlations of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) with other clinicobiological parameters, we measured the cytosolic levels of this marker by means of an immunoradiometric assay (IRMA) in 95 squamous cell lung carcinoma samples. We also analyzed the levels of pS2, tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA), hyaluronic acid (HA), free beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-HCG), CYFRA 21.1 and CA 125 in cytosol. On the cell surface we analyzed the concentrations of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), HA, erbB-2 oncoprotein, CD44s, CD44v5 and CD44v6. Other parameters considered were clinical stage, lymph node involvement, histological grade (HG), ploidy and the cellular S-phase fraction measured by flow cytometry on nuclei obtained from fresh tissues. In the 95 squamous cell carcinomas the cytosolic levels of NSE varied from 4.5 to 2235 ng/mg protein (median: 267) and were significantly higher (p < 0.001) than those observed in 38 samples of normal pulmonary tissue obtained from the same patients (range: 56-657; median: 141.5). When classifying tumors according to the different parameters analyzed, we observed that the levels of NSE were higher in aneuploid than in diploid cases (p = 0.046) and in those that were HG3 than in those that were HG2 (p < 0.001). Tumors with high NSE levels (> 422 ng/mg protein; 75th percentile) were more likely to have high S-phase values (p = 0.012) and were more frequently aneuploid (p = 0.038) and HG3 (p < 0.001) than those with low levels of NSE (< 180 ng/mg protein; 25th percentile). These results lead us to the following conclusions: 1) the cytosolic concentrations of NSE are significantly higher in squamous cell carcinomas than in healthy pulmonary tissue, and 2) the cytosolic concentrations of NSE are not correlated with clinical stage or nodal involvement. However, in our study higher levels of the enzyme were statistically correlated with aneuploidy, histological grade 3 and S-phase. This may explain its association with poorer outcome and progression, but also the more favorable response of tumors with elevated NSE to chemotherapy, as suggested by other groups.
