[Use of purified antigens in the serodiagnosis and epidemiologic studies of human malaria. Importance of the ELISA technic for determining specific IgG and IgM].

A purified antigen was isolated from the red blood cells of Saimiri sciureus which was experimentally infected by Plasmodium falciparum. An enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) was carried out thanks to this antigen. The results obtained with the test were evaluated from two series of sera: one coming from an endemic area, the other taken out of it. The results were compared with those obtained with indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) which is considerated as reference test. There is a good correlation between the two tests when anti-IgG conjugate is used for ELISA but there is no correlation with anti-IgM conjugate. One of the advantages of the ELISA, is that it allows a separate evaluation of specific IgG and IgM. Consequently distinction between recent and past infection would be possible. This may be useful for estimating the efficiency of an antimalaric campaign.

[Use of a heterologous antigen (Schistosoma bovis) for the immunoenzymatic serodiagnosis of urinary bilharziasis].

The authors propose the utilisation of an heterologous antigen, Schistosoma bovis for the diagnosis of human schistosomiases by enzyme immunoassay. The method is particularly recommended for the detection of S. haematobium and S. intercalatum diseases. It is sensitive and reproducible, its specificity being only limited by the existence of cross-reactions with some tissular helminthiases.

[Laryngeal histoplasmosis due to "Histoplasma duboisii" (author's transl)].

Primitive detection of the Histoplasma duboisii accompanied with proteiform manifestations, is rare in the superior air ways. Its localisation at the larynx level is an exception and makes the very interest of our following reported observation. In front of this hard diagnostic, only the pathogenic agent visualisation gives evidence. Among serological techniques, immuno-fluorescence and E.L.I.S.A. are very helpful. Therapeutic possibilities have been improved by Miconazole which both associates efficiency and inocuity.

[Immunoenzymatic detection of human African trypanosomiasis using dried blood samples].

The application of the ELISA technique to dry blood samples is described with special reference to some parameters: the correspondence between the "confetti" eluate and the serum dilution, and the preservation time of the dry blood samples. A correlation is made between the results obtained with the confetti and those obtained with the sera. The study shows that the dry blood samples are a valuable tool for a large scale diagnosis of human African trypnanosomiasis during sero-epidemiological mass investigations.

[HBs antigen in rural population of Senegal (author's transl)].

The prevalence of HBs Ag has been determined by counter-immuno-electrophoresis among 16,006 Africans of all ages and both sexes living in 132 villages chosen at random in whole Senegal. 8,83 +/- 0,5 p. 100 of the examined people were positive for HBs Ag. HBs Ag is much more frequent among males (11,1 p. 100) than females (7,0 p. 100). Almost non existent before the age of 1, prevalence increases during childhood and reaches its summit between 10 and 14 years for boys (14,7 p. 100) and between 20 and 24 for women (10,1 p. 100), then it decreases regularly with old age and become negligible over 60. Ethnic factors and way of living are more important than geographical factors. Subtyping demonstrated the importance of contamination inside families and consequently the preponderance of oral over percutaneous transmission.
