Expectations they cannot meet: Understanding postnatal depression.
While many medical explanations have been presented to explain the cause of postnatal depression, there is a strong argument that it may be due to psychological distress. Offering mothers a less idealised image of motherhood and greater child care support may help to undermine feelings of dependence, isolation and low self-support, which are known to lead to depression.
