Daily plasma prolactin levels were measured in women with various gynecologic endocrinopathies in order to compare mean levels and variations over the sampling interval with prolactin levels in women with normal ovulatory cycles. The normal-cycle mean prolactin level was 14.7 ng/ml +/- 1.4 (SE). Levels greater than 42 ng/ml, 2 SD above the mean, were considered abnormal. Patients with endocrinopathies were classified as "normoprolactinemic" if the mean prolactin level was less than 42 ng/ml and less than 12% of the daily values peaked to greater than 42 ng/ml. An "intermediate" group was defined in which the mean prolactin level was less than 42 ng/ml but more than 12% of daily values peaked to greater than 42 ng/ml. Those patients whose mean prolactin levels were greater than 42 ng/ml were considered "hyperprolactinemic". Significant differences were noted when mean prolactin levels were compared with normal-cycle levels in 16 or 18 women with various gynecologic endocrinopathies. The need for repeated prolactin sampling in certain clinical situations, as well as the possibility that a "critical" prolactin level is necessary for normal ovarian function, is discussed.
Increasing attention is being paid to group homes as an alternative form of residential care for adolescents. In the home described here, young people who had been recommended for hospitalization or long-term residential treatment were helped by nonprofessional counselors to deal with their problems successfully.
The runaway centers that evolved in the late 1960s in response to the needs of troubled young people are fulfilling many of the goals of the community mental health center (CMHC) movement. These centers provide their young clients the five basic CMHC services--inpatient services, outpatient services, emergency services, partial hospitalization, and consultation and education--in an individualized and economical manner. They can serve as a model for a variety of community services, such as drop-in centers for troubled individuals, mediation centers for families, shelters for battered women, and residences for people suffering an acute psychotic break.
A prospective study was performed to determine the incidence of group B streptococci cultured from the cervix in a series of obstetric clinic patients at St. Margaret's Hospital. Cultures were taken during each trimester and planted to both a blood agar plate and a selective broth medium. Of a total of 812 cultures, 18 were positive, an over-all incidence of 2.2 per cent. During the first, second, and third trimesters, 2.2 per cent, 2.5 per cent, and 1.9 per cent of cultures were positive, respectively. Women with positive cultures were treated with a 10 day course of oral penicillin or a suitable alternative; four of 16 had persistent positive cultures at the end of the first treatment period, three of these four responded to a second course of antibiotics, and the remaining patient responded after a third treatment course. The total number of positive cultures by selective broth was 24, compared to nine in blood agar, indicating a 2.7-fold increase in pickup by the selective broth.
Chromosomal proteins selectively interact with 5'-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdUrd) substituted DNA relative to unsubstituted DNA. The relative affinities of chromosomal proteins for BrdUrd-DNA and unsubstituted DNA were measured by both thermal chromatography on hydroxylapatite and selective retention on nitrocellulose filters. Certain chromosomal proteins have a high affinity for hydroxylapatite; thus, during thermal chromatography of chromatin, the single-stranded DNA component percolates across a bed of adsorbed proteins as it elutes. We have measured the relative affinities of Brd-Urd-DNA and normal DNA for chromosomal proteins by chromatographing appropriate mixtures on hydroxylapatite. The results show that, under these conditions, the histone components, rather than the nonhistone chromatin proteins, retard the BrdUrd-substituted DNA. In addition, the individual histones vary in the degree of their affinity for BrdUrd-DNA in the order H3 greater than H4 greater than H2A greater than H2B greater than H1. We have used the property that protein-DNA complexes have a preferential affinity for nitrocellulose filters over naked DNA to measure the selective binding of BrdUrd-DNA and unsubstituted DNA's to both histone and nonhistone chromosomal proteins at low temperatures. The histones selectively retained BrdUrd-DNA on filters in the order H4 greater than H2A greater than H3 greater than H2B greater than H1. Using this assay, the nonhistones displayed greater selectivity toward BrdUrd-DNA than the histone fraction. We interpret these results to mean BrdUrd-containing DNA has a specific affinity for certain chromosomal proteins with BrdUrd-DNA may be the basis for selective inhibition of cytodifferentiation by the thymidine analogue, BrdUrd.
After a brief historical survey of child placement practices in the United States, this paper will address itself to an innovative form of placement for adolescents, "alternative group foster homes." The origins of two of these homes in "runaway houses" and their ideological underpinnings in the social and political critique of the counterculture will be discussed. The two homes will then be described and their functioning contrasted. One of them, Frye House, has managed to remain faithful to the radically democratic principles which animated its founding, and the other, Markham House, has not; the emphasis here will be on this difference and on its consequences for the homes as a whole and for the young people who have lived in them.

The replacement of thymidine by 5-bromodeoxyuridine in DNA leads to a greatly enhanced stability of chromatin from hepatoma tissue culture or embryonic rat pancreas, as measured by thermal chromatography on hydroxylapatite. The increased stability is directly correlated with the degree of bromodeoxyuridine substitution. On the other hand, the incorporation of bromodeoxyuridine into DNA results in a modest stabilization of purified DNA. Substitution of nucleotide also alters slightly the hyperchromicity profile generated during the thermal denaturation of purified DNA and chromatin. The observed changes can best be explained by an altered interaction between the bromodeoxyuridine-DNA and other chromatin components, presumably proteins. These results suggests that the selective effects of bromodeoxyuridine on cytodifferentiation may be due to an increased affinity of regulatory proteins for bromodeoxyuridine-DNA.

The purpose of this project was to determine the impact of an interactive videodisc (IVD) simulation in labor and delivery on the learning and clinical confidence of junior-level nursing students. Two clinical groups of students were created from the total 39 and both groups were pretested on knowledge and clinical confidence. Group 1 (n = 18) completed the IVD program before the first clinical experience in the labor and delivery setting. Group 2 (n = 21) received a traditional clinical experience first and then completed the IVD program. Students completing the IVD program plus the clinical experience had significantly greater clinical confidence and learning than those students completing only the clinical experience. Evaluation comments provided suggestions for improvements and were filled with positive comments about the program.
