Gap junctions and direct intercellular communication between rat uterine smooth muscle cells.

We have tested the hypothesis that an increase in direct intercellular communication accompanies the development of gap junctions (GJs) between rat uterine smooth muscle cells at parturition. Intercellular communication in these tissues was studied by exposing one portion of small strips of myometrium to 2-[3H]deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) and determining the longitudinal distribution of tracer after a 5-h period of diffusion. The distribution of 2-DG was greater in parturient compared with ante- and postpartum tissues. Similarly, the apparent diffusion coefficient of 2-DG was almost 10-fold greater in delivering tissues (1.86 X 10(-6) cm2/s) than before (0.199 X 10(-6) cm2/s) or after (0.296 X 10(-6) cm2/s) parturition. Control experiments indicated that the redistribution of 2-DG was dependent on the presence of GJs and was the result of intracellular and direct cell-to-cell diffusion. The appearance of GJs is the myometrium at term facilitates direct intercellular communication between uterine smooth muscle cells during labor. This improved communication may be responsible for synchronizing and coordinating electrical, metabolic, and contractile activity in the uterine wall and, hence, the effective expulsion of fetuses.

Thermodynamics of terrestrial evolution.

The causal element of biological evolution and development can be understood in terms of a potential function which is generalized from the variational principles of irreversible thermodynamics. This potential function is approximated by the rate of entropy production in a configuration space which admits of macroscopic excursions by fluctuation and regression as well as microscopic ones. Analogously to Onsager's dissipation function, the potential takes the form of a saddle surface in this configuration space. The path of evolution following from an initial high dissipation state within the fixed constraint provided by the invariant energy flux from the sun tends toward the stable saddle point by a series of spontaneous regressions which lower the entropy production rate and by an alternating series of spontaneous fluctuations which introduce new internal constraints and lead to a higher entropy production rate. The potential thus rationalizes the system's observed tendency toward "chemical imperialism" (high dissipation) while simultaneously accommodating the development of "dynamic efficiency" and complication (low dissipation).

Thermodynamics of the human brain.

The human brain may be regarded as an irreversible system which is constrained by a fixed inflow of free energy in the form of chemical nourishment from within the body and information from the environment. The evolution of the internal spontaneous process may be described as a path on the saddle surface of entropy production rate in the configuration space of the process variables. From any initial state of high entropy production the system evolves towards the saddle point by a series of regessions to temporary minima alternating with fluctuations which introduce new internal constraints and open new channels for regression. The spontaneous regression steps of the process are to be associated with the learning process and the deductive processes of thought since information is necessarily being stored, whereas the fluctuation or nucleation steps are to be associated with the inductive or creative part of the thought process. The state of consciousness is to be associated with the system undergoing regression. If, under certain boundary conditions, the system attains the stable saddle point, a state of unconsciousness is attained in which no change of state variables occurs in time. The stability of this state is indicated by its resistance to perturbation.
