Science in search of psychiatry.

The evidence of the major physical sciences' developments, based on their primary reductionist analyses, including nuclear power, analysis of the gene DNA, the creation of new chemical structures etc, is around us and self evident in our daily social life. This reductionist model can be seen in the doctor treating the disease as such and/or its specific pathology or pathogenesis. Medical practice does involve a social interaction between individuals. The social dimension presents for research the interface between the individual's mind and the views of his/her society or social group. This interface becomes critical in a psychiatric consultation as the locus of the disease, if any, is not clear and may not even be at the interview. These social dimensions are examined in terms of the Queen of the Sciences, Mathematics.

Language and the young stutterer: a new look at old theories and findings.

The major theories and research approaches as to the etiology and development of stuttering are reviewed from a historical perspective. Findings are drawn from different sources indicating that language deficits are an initial contributing factor and a continuing component of this disorder. Those subsets of children which constitute high-risk groups are identified. It is suggested that researchers begin investigating the underlying organic bases of stuttering and its relationship to stages of language development. Finally, clinicians are encouraged to employ a therapy program that is concerned with all areas of language, rather than emphasizing treating only the symptoms of stuttering behavior.

Assessment of assertiveness in drug abusers.

Administered measures of assertion, social assertion, aggression, and social anxiety to a heroin-addicted population, psychotic outpatients, court-referred drug users and a college student group (N = 114). The addicts and court-referred drug patients were less assertive, less socially assertive, and more socially anxious than non-addict populations. Furthermore, the heroin and psychiatric outpatient groups had a very high correlation between their assertion and aggression scores, which was not found in the college student or court-referred, drug-using group.

Mothers and children in hospital.

Between 1965-1972 244 individual mothers were admitted on 283 occasions accompanied by 287 children to a general hospital unit. This cohort has been followed up to ascertain re-admission to any New Zealand psychiatric facility for two follow-ups at 1-8 years and 5-12 years. A postal survey of attitudes was also carried out. The content of the replies has been analysed, with statistical and anecdotal accounts of patients' and husbands' expressed feelings and attitudes. These are compared with observations in the literature about themes of hostility and anxiety. The circumstances surrounding the homicide of a baby in this series together with our various rationalisations, value judgements and assessment of the situations are described.

Australasian suicidology.

A survey has been made of 38 studies of Australasian medical and hospital experiences with attempted and completed suicide in the last decade. The range and depth of the data recorded in the 38 studies have been analysed and reported together with comments on some other multivariate studies from overseas. The implications of these studies for the current medical views about attempted and completed suicide (are they two distinct types or do they lie on a continuum?) are discussed within a framework relating to the views about suicide that are embedded in our culture.

Models for hospital care.

Analyses of hospital functioning are frequently reported with patient outcomes as the independent variable. However, the main focus in this paper is the length of stay in hospital not just in terms of "short stay" or "long stay", but ranked in tenths so that ten-point distributions of patient use of hospital resources are available for study. From the analysis of these distributions three patterns emerge: (a) a "standard procedure" model with best fitting "curves" given by a linear function, eg routine surgery; (b) a "finite disease" model (exponential series) eg internal medicine and, (c) a "person in hospital care" model (power series) eg psychiatry.

Balance theory: possible consequences of number of family members.

This paper outlines one theoretical issue involved in considering the relationships that may exist in a family. The usual approach is to treat the family as a whole, made up of n members. The main issue here is the effects of the numerical size of the family and the many possible total and sub-total relationships that may exist within family constellations. Family structure and function is multivariate, but the focus here is the numberical factor.

Puerperal psychosis: a follow-up study of a joint mother and baby treatment programme.

A cohort of 54 mothers with puerperal psychoses admitted between 1965 and 1969 to a joint mother and baby short stay treatment programme is reported with a follow-up at the end of 1973. The outcomes indicate that this treatment routine is as satisfactory as other programmes. Those who, for various reasons, did not complete the joint programme of treatment did not do so well.
