The authors have completed a retrospective study on closing base wedge osteotomies. This review includes preoperative and postoperative clinical and radiographic evaluation. A total of 61 procedures were evaluated on 47 patients. All procedures were performed at The Podiatry Hospital of Pittsburgh. Subjective analysis of patient acceptance is included, as well as an in-depth discussion of surgical technique, with emphasis on fixation.
The Smith design subtalar joint arthroeresis has been performed at The Podiatry Hospital of Pittsburgh since 1982 for the surgical correction of hypermobile flatfeet in children. The authors review the historical background of the procedure with emphasis on surgical procedure, indications, and complications. The results of a 7-year retrospective study of over 40 cases revealed a 95% success rate with limited complications. Some interesting radiographic changes in the talus and calcaneus are described.
