Extraskeletal osteoma in a cat.

This paper describes a case of a benign osseous lesion which arose in the right front leg of an 8-year-old spayed female cat. The growth was situated in the dermal tissue above the olecranon, but not attached to it, and shelled out easily at surgery. While certain non-neoplastic lesions, such as hamartomas or cases of heterotopic ossification, may appear histologically similar, the present case was considered to be a true tumour on the basis of the clinical, macroscopic and histological findings, and was termed an osteoma. The cat is remaining under observation, but there had been no recurrence 3 1/2 months after surgery.

Assessment of standing aids for the physically handicapped.

The suitability of four commercially available standing aids was assessed for routine therapy of a group of severely handicapped patients in hospital care. The problems which arose were mainly technical and these are considered. From experience gained during the study the design requirements of an ideal aid for these patients are proposed.

A real time 2-dimensional ultrasonic scanner for clinical use.

The technical details of a real time 2-dimensional ultrasonic scanning system are described, with particular regard to the improved clinical performance over other 2-dimensional scanners. Our instrument is capable of being used with existing ultrasonic equipment extending certain standard ultrasonic machines for use as real time 2-dimensional scanners conveniently and at little cost. Initial results are given and future technical developments are discussed.

A comprehensive treatment unit for the respiratory distress syndrome in the newborn.

Various systems have been devised to improve the therapy of idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome in newborn infants. This article describes a new ventilator which provides alternating positive and negative pressure ventilation(APNPV) in addition to the more conventional techniques. Safety aspects, technical performance and cleaning procedures are described. A brief summary of the clinical performance of the machine is given.

Mechanical deficiencies in scintillation counters, scanners, and gamma cameras.

After an accident involving a scintillation counter, the machanical integrity of scintillation counters and their stands, rectilinear scanners, and gamma cameras was examined. An alarming proportion of these divices were found to be poorly designed with consequent danger to patients and staff. This class of equipment should be covered by standards incorporated in a comprehensive hospital technical memorandum.
