Transuretero-ureterostomy--a review of its use in modern paediatric urology.

Transuretero-ureterostomy (TUU) was performed on 55 patients with a mean age of 10 years at operation and a mean follow-up of 4 years. The indications for this procedure are described and, if followed, it is safe and easily performed. The indications for its use may be as a primary procedure for unilateral ureteric pathology, as a salvage procedure, after failed ureteric reimplantation or as part of a urinary undiversion. There have been no deaths and only one patient later required a nephroureterectomy.

The persisting mesonephric duct syndrome: the description of a new syndrome.

Persistence of the mesonephric duct is a well recognized but uncommon abnormality that results in vasoureteral fusion. This anomaly may be accompanied by rectal malformations and disturbances of renal ascent or morphology. The literature on persistence of the mesonephric duct was reviewed and the data were correlated with our understanding of embryogenesis in an attempt to understand the relationship between these seemingly unrelated anomalies. It is concluded that the triad of persistence of the mesonephric duct, rectal anomalies and anomalies of renal ascent or morphology may be the result of a common embryologic event and should be regarded as representing a distinct syndrome. A theory to explain this syndrome is proposed.

Torulopsis pyelonephritis associated with papillary necrosis: a case report.

A case of Torulopsis glabrata pyelonephritis associated with papillary necrosis is presented. Torulopsis glabrata is a potential pathogen in the urinary tract capable of producing renal damage, sepsis and death. In this case the involved kidney sustained progressive damage, necessitating nephrectomy for cure. Examination of the kidney showed fungal involvement of the parenchyma and collecting system.
